Job description

Job Summary
Responsible for all aspects of safety, within their area of responsibility. Directs the proper planning, budgeting and implementation of computer resources for line of road operations. Directs Electronic Specialists and Signalmen in their duties to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the automatic classification of freight cars. This position is technically specialized and is equivalent to a Manager of Signals.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities

  • Manage for constant improvement in the safety of all signal personnel and equipment
  • Conducts safety, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), and operating rules classes.
  • Coach, teach, and train employees
  • Perform safety observations and tests on rules compliance
  • Manage/schedule all signal manpower and equipment.
  • Ensure mainline territory is compliant with all Federal, State and Local regulations, as well as CSX Signal Rules and Instructions.
  • Review computer based records
  • Develop/present technical training programs to further educate local work force.
  • Ensures non-compliant CSX assets are corrected by appropriate remedial action.
  • Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by manager.
  • Approves and handles all material needs for area of responsibility


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree/4-year Degree
  • Less than 1 year of experience in Less than 1 year of experience required in Engineering (civil, structural, electrical, or mechanical), Signal Maintenance, Signal Construction, or Electronic/Electrical Trades

Equivalent Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 5 or more years of experience in required in Engineering (civil, structural, electrical, or mechanical), Signal Maintenance, Signal Construction, or Electronic/Electrical Trades.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of the duties of a Signal Technician/Specialist
  • Knowledge of signal systems, mainframes, PC's, fiber optic components, and theory/performance characteristics of electronic devices
  • Ability to create and understand circuit drawings, equipment specifications, and a knowledge of safe job procedures and work methods
  • Must have computer application and programming skills
  • Must have a working knowledge and ability to interpret the labor agreements covering local personnel
  • Must have the ability to understand/interpret legal compliance with Federal and State regulations regarding signal systems
