Job Description

 

A global steel trading company with 20 offices throughout the US, Canada and Mexico trading in a wide range of steel products. The MISA team is currently seeking a Safety Manager in our Cincinnati, Ohio or Detroit, Michigan office. Reporting directly to the Corporate Planning Vice President and Investment Management Team, the Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental, health, and safety programs that promote a safe, healthy, and compliant workplace across multiple operating locations. This role partners closely with operations leadership to drive safety performance, ensure regulatory compliance, reduce risk, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. The Safety Manager provides leadership and guidance to site management and employees while supporting the organization's long-term safety strategy and growth initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Develop, implement, and maintain EHS policies, procedures, and programs in compliance with OSHA regulations and other applicable federal, state, and local requirements.

  • Provide EHS leadership and support across multiple facilities, ensuring consistent application of safety standards and best practices.
  • Partner with operations leadership to promote accountability, engagement, and ownership of safety initiatives throughout the organization.
  • Conduct workplace inspections, safety audits, risk assessments, and hazard analyses to identify improvement opportunities and reduce workplace risks.
  • Review audit findings and ensure timely completion of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Lead incident investigations, including serious injuries and high-potential events, utilizing root cause analysis methodologies to identify contributing factors and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Manage OSHA inspections, regulatory inquiries, corrective action plans, and compliance-related documentation.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs covering key topics including lockout/tagout, machine guarding, powered industrial truck safety, hazard communication, walking-working surfaces, arc flash awareness, and other required programs.
  • Support the development and standardization of EHS processes and programs across multiple entities and operating environments, including commercial and residential roll forming and service center manufacturing operations.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the organization's ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
  • Perform risk assessments and implement effective hazard controls utilizing the hierarchy of controls framework.
  • Under the guidance of leadership monitor safety performance metrics and prepare incident reports, monthly reports, trend analysis, and annual safety performance summaries.
  • Maintain safety records, regulatory documentation, training records, and related EHS data.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor regarding safety requirements, policies, and best practices.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, including 5S and operational excellence programs.
  • Maintain safety resources and communications on the company intranet and other employee communication platforms.
  • Attend and participate in organizational meetings and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Proven experience in workplace safety management along with strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, occupational safety principals and regulatory compliance requirements. Experience leading EHS programs within manufacturing or service center environments. Working knowledge of ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems, including implementation, maintenance, and auditing practices. Experience conducting incident investigations and applying root cause analysis methodologies. Strong understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment techniques, and the hierarchy of controls. Knowledge of industrial safety programs, including Machine Guarding, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Forklift and Powered Industrial Truck Safety, Hazard Communication/Safety Data Sheets, Walking and Working Surfaces and Arc Flash Safety.

Ability to influence and collaborate effectively with leaders and employees at all organizational levels. Strong leadership, communication, facilitation, and presentation skills. Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and locations simultaneously. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and EHS reporting systems.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive safety or EHS experience.
  • Experience supporting multiple facilities or locations preferred.
  • Manufacturing and/or service center operations experience strongly preferred.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification preferred; equivalent professional certification or active pursuit of certification will be considered.
  • Experience with OSHA compliance programs, inspections, investigations, and corrective action management required.
  • ISO 45001 implementation, maintenance, or auditing experience preferred.

 PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Requires physical mobility and the ability to perform routine operational tasks safely and effectively.

 WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Typical office, warehouse and manufacturing plant environments.
  • Travel is required, including local and multi-site travel with occasional overnight stays. Responsibilities include supporting operations in Mexico; bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus.
