What is a cross functional job?

A cross-functional job involves working across multiple departments or teams to coordinate efforts, improve processes, and achieve company goals. Professionals in these roles collaborate with diverse groups, such as marketing, engineering, and sales, to drive efficiency and innovation. Strong communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are essential skills for success in cross-functional roles. These jobs are common in project management, product development, and strategy-focused positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a cross functional position?

To excel in a cross-functional role, you should possess strong project management skills, a broad industry knowledge base, and experience working across multiple departments or disciplines. Familiarity with collaboration tools like Slack, Asana, or Microsoft Teams, along with formal training in Agile or Lean methodologies, is highly beneficial. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and conflict-resolution abilities are vital to bridging gaps between diverse teams and stakeholders. These skills are crucial because cross-functional roles often require aligning different groups toward shared goals and driving complex projects to successful completion.

What are some challenges faced in a cross functional position and how can they be overcome?

One of the main challenges in cross-functional roles is managing conflicting priorities and communication styles among various teams, such as marketing, engineering, and operations. Success requires proactively clarifying goals, setting expectations, and facilitating constructive dialogue to ensure everyone is aligned. Building strong relationships and maintaining transparency can help break down silos and foster trust. If you enjoy mediating discussions and driving projects forward amid diverse perspectives, this role can be very rewarding and prepares you for broader leadership responsibilities.

About the job

A problem isn’t truly solved until it’s solved for all. That’s why Googlers build products that help create opportunities for everyone, whether down the street or across the globe. As a Technical Program Manager at Google, you’ll use your technical expertise to lead complex, multi-disciplinary projects from start to finish. You’ll work with stakeholders to plan requirements, identify risks, manage project schedules, and communicate clearly with cross-functional partners across the company. You're equally comfortable explaining your team's analyses and recommendations to executives as you are discussing the technical tradeoffs in product development with engineers.

As the Global Technical Program Manager for the Cross Functional Program (CFP), Google Data Center Operations Tiered Meeting Structure, you will advocate and continually optimize this strategic initiative to drive consistency, efficiency, and economies of scale. You will own and restructure CFP to bring cross-functional partner teams, such as GSO running the server floor, Data Center Operations (DCOps) managing infrastructure, and EHS ensuring safety, together for highly productive site-level operational discussions. You will apply the proper program accuracy to transition localized, 5-minute check-in meetings into a structured operational framework that resolves cross-functional dependencies and accelerates Machine Learning (ML) deployments.

You will accomplish this by taking a step to establish the necessary foundational structure, developing a program charter, Business Requirements Documents (BRDs), RACI matrices, and process flow charts with swimlanes. You will also orchestrate the program strategy, define the tiered engagement model, and build the governance structure needed to ensure the program scales with exponential business growth.

Behind everything our users see online is the architecture built by the Technical Infrastructure team to keep it running. From developing and maintaining our data centers to building the next generation of Google platforms, we make Google's product portfolio possible. We're proud to be our engineers' engineers and love voiding warranties by taking things apart so we can rebuild them. We keep our networks up and running, ensuring our users have the best and fastest experience possible.

Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
