Crisis Text Counselors often encounter emotionally intense situations, which can be challenging and sometimes lead to compassion fatigue or burnout. To support counselors, organizations typically provide comprehensive training, ongoing supervision, and access to mental health resources. Peer support and opportunities for self-care are also emphasized to ensure counselors can continue providing effective help.

What are Crisis Text Counselors?

Crisis Text Counselors are trained volunteers or professionals who provide support to people experiencing emotional distress, mental health issues, or crisis situations through text-based communication. They listen, offer empathy, and help texters navigate difficult emotions or circumstances by providing resources and coping strategies. Their main goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of those reaching out, often serving as a bridge to further help if needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Crisis Text Counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Crisis Text Counselor, you need strong active listening, crisis intervention techniques, and a foundational understanding of mental health, often supported by crisis counseling training or certification. Familiarity with digital communication platforms, texting software, and risk assessment protocols is essential. Compassion, emotional resilience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills for effectively supporting individuals in crisis. These skills enable counselors to provide timely, empathetic, and effective support to those in need, often during their most vulnerable moments.

Job description

Who we are
At Crisis Text Line we believe that every person in crisis deserves to be heard, understood, and supported. Our mission is carried forward by people who lead with empathy, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility to one another and the communities we serve.
We are building a team of thoughtful, purpose-driven professionals who want their work to matter. Across every role, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to meaningful impact, collaborate with committed colleagues, and help shape systems, programs, and experiences that strengthen our organization and the people who make our mission possible.
If you're driven by purpose, passionate about designing meaningful learning experiences, and motivated to build programs that empower and develop volunteers over time, this is the place for you.

Crisis Counselor Supervisors play a critical role in the success of Crisis Text Line by providing real-time guidance and support to our remote volunteer Crisis Counselors, ensuring texters receive the highest quality care. You bring a calm, supportive, and empathetic approach to your work, fostering a positive and effective environment for Crisis Counselors while always keeping both the texter experience and the Crisis Counselor experience top of mind.
Crisis Text Line offers mental health support in both Spanish and English. In order to provide the service in both languages, our bilingual staff are responsible to provide both Spanish and English support, based on business needs, thus time spent on both services will vary. These bilingual roles require mental flexibility and the ability to easily oscillate between both languages fluidly.

  • A big thinker: You love to team up! You are always thinking of ways to better the quality of service to our texters and Crisis Counselors.
  • Tech-Savvy: You are proficient in G-suite and are totally comfortable navigating new and exciting websites and online platforms.

What you'll do
