What is a crisis call center?

A Crisis Call Center is a specialized service that provides immediate support, resources, and intervention for individuals experiencing emotional distress, mental health crises, or other urgent situations. Staffed by trained professionals or volunteers, these centers offer confidential assistance over the phone, and sometimes through text or online chat. Their main goal is to help de-escalate crises, provide emotional support, and connect callers with appropriate services or emergency help when needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a crisis call center specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Crisis Call Center Specialist, you need strong listening skills, crisis intervention training, and often a background in psychology, social work, or a related field. Familiarity with call management systems, crisis intervention protocols, and relevant certifications like ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) is common. Exceptional empathy, emotional resilience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable effective support for individuals in crisis, ensuring their safety and connecting them with appropriate resources.

What are some common challenges faced by crisis call center staff, and how are they supported in managing stress?

Crisis call center staff often handle emotionally intense situations, which can lead to compassion fatigue and stress. To help manage these challenges, many centers provide regular supervision, access to mental health resources, and debriefing sessions after particularly difficult calls. Team members typically work closely together and support each other, fostering a collaborative environment. Ongoing training in self-care and stress management is also common to help staff maintain their well-being while providing crucial support to callers.

What qualifications do you need to work for the crisis call center?

To work as a crisis call center agent, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, strong communication and active listening skills, and the ability to handle stressful situations. Some positions may require training in crisis intervention or mental health first aid, and familiarity with call center software is often preferred.

Union Representation: OPEIU
Employment Type: Full-time & Part-time Opportunities Available
Shift: Swing & Graveyard Shifts (Evenings, Overnights, Weekends)

Why Swing & Graveyard Specialists Are Essential

Crisis doesn’t follow a 9–5 schedule — and neither do we. During evening and overnight hours, people experiencing emotional distress are often at their most vulnerable. As a 988 Crisis Call Specialist on Swing or Graveyard shifts, you play a critical role in providing calm, compassionate, life-saving support when other resources may be limited.

If you’re someone who:

  • Thrives during evening or overnight hours
  • Stays grounded in high-stress, high-impact moments
  • Finds purpose in being there when others can’t

This role was built for you.

About the Role

The 988 Crisis Call Specialist provides high-quality crisis intervention and emotional support to individuals contacting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline via phone, online chat, and SMS text. This fully remote role requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while remaining connected to a supportive clinical team.

Swing and Graveyard shifts are ideal for professionals who are confident, focused, and compassionate during quieter but often more intense hours.

Shift Information

  • Swing Shifts: Late afternoon through evening
  • Graveyard Shifts: Overnight, including weekends and holidays

These shifts offer consistent scheduling and are well-suited for candidates who prefer non-traditional hours and fewer daytime distractions.

What You’ll Do

  • Respond to 988 calls, or chats and texts, with empathy and professionalism
  • Conduct suicide and behavioral health risk assessments
  • De-escalate high-intensity situations using evidence-based practices
  • Collaborate with on-shift clinicians when elevated risk is identified
  • Create safety and action plans with callers
  • Provide referrals and connections to community resources
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all program and organizational protocols
Requirements:

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED plus four (4) years of full-time behavioral health experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask across multiple software platforms
  • Comfort working independently during evening or overnight hours
  • Agency Affiliated Counselor (AAC) credential required by the end of the probationary period. Applications must be submitted within 30 days of hire. Crisis Connections will reimburse the cost of obtaining the credential.

Preferred:

  • Crisis intervention or contact center experience
  • Experience in suicide prevention, mental health, or substance use services
  • Knowledge of local or state public mental health systems

Remote Work Requirements

  • High-speed wired internet connection (no hotspots or cellular)
  • Smartphone capable of Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
  • Quiet, confidential workspace
  • Ability to remain seated/standing and focused for extended periods while managing multiple systems

Commitment to Inclusion

We are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. We value lived experience and believe it strengthens the care we provide. BIPOC individuals, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community are strongly encouraged to apply.

Why This Role Matters

  • Meaningful, mission-driven work during critical hours
  • Union-represented position with stability and support
  • Comprehensive training and clinical supervision

  • Be part of a team that supports one another — day and night
