Job description

The Sophia Media Team is looking for a Media Designer who can provide motion-based design work for course development projects in an energetic, collaborative environment. The position is responsible for the conception, creation, and execution of video and static media for Sophia courses.
The Media Designer must be highly organized, and efficient with attention to detail, both in design and administrative tasks.
The Media Designer will support the Academic Team by working collaboratively across various teams to ensure an excellent Learner experience via effective visual communications, and ensure all content complies with the appropriate standards and guidelines.
This position is responsible for developing, organizing and delivering media for new and reworked Sophia courses. As part of the Media Team, this position works extensively with the rest of the Academic Team to ensure the content is clear, intuitive, meets learning objectives and provides an outstanding learning experience.
The ideal candidate will work part-time in either a fully remote or hybrid (Minneapolis or Washington D.C.) manner and be able to turn around content and edits within the timeline created by the project manager.
Job Description
  • Duties & Responsibilities
    • Concept development & design - This position is responsible for developing, organizing and delivering media for new and reworked Sophia courses. As part of the Media Team, this position works extensively with the rest of the Academic Team to ensure the content is clear, intuitive, meets learning objectives and provides an outstanding learning experience.
    • Relationship management - As a member of the Media Team, the Media Designer is responsible for working collaboratively with the Media Manager, other Media Designers, Instructional Designers, Course Producers, Subject Matter Experts (SME's), Project Managers, Web Developers and other stakeholders, to strengthen existing relationships and to build additional relationships as opportunities arise.
    • Art Direction / Vendor Management - The Media Designer will have a firm grasp of the Sophia Media styles, and be comfortable setting direction for new projects if requested. The Media Designer may also facilitate direction and collaboration with offshore design vendors on project specific initiatives when needed.
    • Process improvement and compliance - The Media Designer executes using established processes and standards to ensure timely delivery of best-in-class content. The Designer actively participates in the ongoing development of standards, processes, creative excellence, and innovation within the Media Team. The Designer also ensures all materials meet visual and usability standards established by regulatory, accreditation, and other external authorities.
    • Media Team enrichment and innovation - The Media Designer brings new knowledge and ideas to the Media Team through networking, monitoring trends and emergent best practices, and participating in professional development opportunities.
    • Nimble and efficient - The Media Designer remains calm, focused, and detail-oriented in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment, efficiently juggling projects simultaneously.

Skills
  • Proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite including Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Bridge, After-Effects, Premiere and Audition;
  • Highly experienced motion designer in After-Effects, using essential graphics, creating templates and setting expressions.
  • Strong understanding of AI tools & capabilities for generation and workflows.
  • Basic knowledge of markup, HTML, CSS and Javascript.
  • Self-organized and able to manage multiple project deadlines and production schedules within our project management tools.
  • Strong understanding of design principles, typography, color theory, and layout.
  • Experience in ensuring the best use of proprietary photography, including both the brand aesthetic and purpose-specific fit.
  • Able to present, execute, implement, train, and manage established and emerging best practices.
  • Quick study - ability to absorb information and feedback quickly and apply to new projects.
  • Stays current on latest best practices, including new AI-assisted creative workflows, design trends, and productivity tools.

  • Work Experience
    • 5+ years experience creating targeted, market-specific materials including motion graphics, video work, digital media presentations, and e-communications preferred.
    • Preferred industry experience in an educational, agency, or corporate setting.
  • EducationBachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Other
    • Fully remote or hybrid (if in Minneapolis or Washington D.C. metro) work location.
    • Access information using a computer.
    • Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain.
    • Effectively cope with stressful situations.
    • Strong mental acuity.
    • Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this role.
    • Other essential functions and marginal job functions are subject to modification.

$35.00-40.00/hour is the expected starting pay for this position. This offer is based on current budgetary guidelines and the additional factors outlined below.
