Job Summary:

Assigns and sequences International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM) diagnosis and procedures codes correctly.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Reviews patient records in a timely manner in order to identify an appropriate selection of codes that will accurately reflect the reason for admission, extent of care received, and level of severity of illness.

  • Assigns and sequences International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM) diagnosis and procedures codes correctly.

  • Seeks clarification from medical records and healthcare providers when necessary.

  • Enhances coding knowledge and skills with continuing education activities and by reviewing pertinent literature.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Requires critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.

  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

  • Works under general supervision.

  • Requires a strong understanding of the specialized concepts, practices, and procedures in the area of specialization.

Position Requirements:

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 1 year of relevant experience preferred.

Education

  • High school diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or higher required upon hire

Licensure/Certification/Registration

  • HCS-D - Home Care Coding Specialist - Diagnosis through Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC) required within 12 months of employment in this position OR

  • HCS-O - Home Care Clinical Specialist - OASIS through Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC) required within 12 months of employment in this position AND

  • COS-C - Certificate for OASIS Specialist - Clinical through OASIS Certificate and Competency Board (OCCB) preferred
