Job Title: Senior Engineer - Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for managing and maintaining Grand Central Terminal's (GCT) infrastructure, with a focus on building automation and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. Oversees mechanical activities and leads long-term planning to ensure safety, efficiency, and improved customer experience.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manages labor, materials, and equipment for building automation, inspection, and HVAC maintenance at GCT. Establishes performance goals and operating procedures for related maintenance and construction activities.
  • Provide day-to-day management of the inspection and maintenance, repair work in GCT involving Building Management Systems (BMS) technicians, vent cleaners, HVAC mechanics and machinists.
  • Evaluate and optimize BMS (Building Management System) performance for improved efficiency and energy savings. Support system testing, programming and commissioning. Maintain and upgrade GCT's BMS, ensuring integration with other control systems. Troubleshoot issues and collaborate with C&D and Finance teams on long-term planning and development efforts, including the Metro-North 20 Year Needs Assessment.
  • Coordinate and execute upgrade and repair plans by scheduling in-house construction activities and preparing estimates in collaboration with internal departments and external contractors. Define work scopes based on field conditions and manage craft labor deployment, prioritizing and adjusting schedules to meet project timelines.
  • Support Metro-North's safety program by enforcing safety policies for personnel working in GCT and the train shed. Review operational documents, including logs, budgets, production, payroll reports, etc. and provided status updates to the Deputy Director.
  • Assist the Superintendent GCT Maintenance in preparing the department's annual budget and equipment planning. Develop staff and support work group to expand system knowledge, reduce operational costs and meet evolving improvements needs within GCT.
  • Select, develop, and motivate staff and provide career development for team members. Provide effective coaching and counseling. Manage team and individual performance. Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables staff to develop and contribute to their full potential.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical and mechanical diagrams, schematics and HVAC layouts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Building Management System (BMS) used to monitor and manage the mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical services in GCT.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess complex situations and make timely, effective decisions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to develop and write detailed specifications for material, services and supplies.
  • Demonstrated ability to read blueprints and schematics and to prepare material take-offs, as well as perform field design work when required.
  • Strong project management, forecasting and coordination skills with a focus on quality control, quality assurance, and meeting deadlines.
  • Strong leadership abilities with a focus on promoting teamwork and guiding effective workforce collaboration.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with internal departments, city, state and federal agencies.
  • Must become roadway worker within six (6) months of hire.
  • Strong knowledge of safety rules and regulations to promote a safe work environment.
  • Knowledge of BACnet, BMS Design and building automation-based products.
  • Must have the ability to commission variable frequency drives (VFD).
  • Strong knowledge with mechanical programming.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite and/or comparable applications.
  • Available to be on call 24 hours per day 7 days per week.
  • Valid Driver's license.

  • Familiarity with the various craft collective bargaining agreements for personnel in GCT.
  • Thorough knowledge of GCT physical characteristics including exits, stairways, elevators, escalators, etc.
  • Working knowledge of Metro-North's safety programs / policies.
  • Knowledge of Grand Central Terminal building automation and HVAC mechanical infrastructure, including repair, rehabilitation and construction and the material and equipment associated with this work.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience managing building operations and/or construction activities.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience managing a diverse workforce and/or projects.

The following is/are preferred:
  • Experience managing a unionized workforce.

  • This is a policy maker position. Pursuant to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the "Commission").
  • Actual salary offers may vary based on individual work experience. The annual salary range is subject to change and may be modified at the company's discretion.
  • This position requires a driver's license. Employees driving company vehicles will be subject to License Monitoring and must complete defensive driver training once every three years for current MTA drivers; or within 180 days of hire or transfer for an employee entering an authorized driving position.
  • Current employee applicants should be in their current position 12 months prior to starting a new role and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance and discipline record.
  • This position is safety-sensitive and subject to toxicological testing.
