What is a CPS coach?

CPS Coaches, or Collaborative & Proactive Solutions Coaches, are professionals who guide individuals, families, or organizations in implementing the CPS model. This approach, developed by Dr. Ross Greene, focuses on understanding and solving problems collaboratively, especially with children exhibiting challenging behaviors. CPS Coaches help identify underlying issues, teach problem-solving skills, and foster positive relationships by working closely with clients. Their goal is to reduce conflict and promote effective communication using evidence-based strategies.

What are the main challenges a CPS coach faces when supporting teachers in implementing collaborative problem solving strategies?

One of the main challenges a CPS Coach encounters is adapting collaborative problem solving (CPS) techniques to fit diverse classroom environments and varying teacher readiness levels. Successfully supporting teachers requires strong communication skills, patience, and the ability to model CPS strategies effectively while addressing skepticism or resistance to change. Coaches often need to provide ongoing feedback, facilitate reflective practice, and build trust to foster a culture of collaboration and growth. This dynamic role also involves coordinating with administrators and other support staff to ensure consistent implementation and sustainability of CPS initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPS coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CPS (Collaborative Problem Solving) Coach, you need a solid background in behavioral science, education, or social work, usually supported by relevant degrees and experience working with children or families. Familiarity with the CPS model, training certifications in Collaborative Problem Solving, and the ability to use digital coaching platforms are typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help coaches build trust and facilitate effective collaboration with families and care teams. These skills and qualifications are essential to guide stakeholders through the CPS framework, fostering resilience and improved outcomes for children and families.
