Job Purpose: Provides bedside respiratory care to patients as assigned by director and given on the physician's written order for both inhouse and out‑patient care. Supports director and coordinates and performs overall operating procedures of the Arterial Blood Gas Lab including assisting with CAP surveys both online and every 2 years for in-house survey by CAP.; assures an ongoing quality control program for all equipment and services. Assist with department schedules and provide clinical orientation for new hires and on-going training of current staff. Actively participates in training staff with our Intubation program and scheduling with surgery for checkoffs. Ensure all needed supplies are available and orders supplies as needed from materials. Actively assists with updating policies and procedures to meet regulations. Collaborates with education department to teach new staff nurses and other staff as needed.

Education & Qualifications: Must be a graduate of an approved school of respiratory care.

Required Licenses/Certifications: State of Texas certification required; BLS & ACLS certification required. PALS preferred.

Work Experience: 10 years of respiratory therapy experience required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the safe and effective administration of medically prescribed medications, knowing their indications and contraindications.
• Knows and follows the indications and contraindications, the policy and procedures in administering therapeutic modalities to include: IPPB, IS, USN, UDN, CPT, MDI.
• Sets up and monitors oxygen administration.
• Performs arterial punctures using radial, brachial, and femoral sites independently sets up oxygen cylinders and assures proper usage and safety measures are in place.
• Member of the "code team" responding to arrest situations. As part of the team will manage airway bagging. Must be certified in CPR procedures annually.
• Performs all aspects of artificial airway care. Able to perform deep blind tracheal suctioning
• on patients.
• Daily/weekly preventative maintenance and calibration, quality assurance of ABG analyzers.
• Setting up and maintenance of croup tent.
• Familiar with oxygen delivery systems (i.e., nasal, venuturi mask).
• Familiar with measuring devices to include, but not limited to, pulse oximeter, Wrights respirometer, oxygen blenders.
• Responsible for the setup, safety check, monitoring, and troubleshooting of mechanical ventilators.
• Familiar with CPAP set up and administration of CPAP.
• Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job related hazards.
• Provides leadership and guidance to staff in goal setting, problem solving, resource management and outcome achievement.
• Meets performance objectives and metrics for the department, mentors and assesses the level of competence of staff in a timely manner.

• Collaborate with leaders in development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization and respiratory standards.
• Assist with the orientation program for respiratory staff, identifies the needs and recommends staff development and education programs.
• Assist with the design and implantation of curriculum for clinical competence of staff and maintain ongoing evaluations of staff competencies.
• Assist Respiratory Leadership on recruitment, interviews, selection/hiring, and staff retention.
• Conducts concurrent audits of patient care records to determine documentation compliance and makes recommendations for improvement.
• Participates in the monitoring and evaluation of patient care utilizing the Quality Assurance process and utilizes quality improvements.
• Assist with departmental and hospital Performance Improvement Plan.
• Assist in the management of a comprehensive program to ensure The Joint Commission standards are met.
• Checks availability and ensures equipment is in good working condition and reports findings.
• Collaborates and communicates with supply coordinator regarding department supply needs.
• Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records.
• Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
• Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information as observed by peers and management.
• Attends all mandatory education programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety and regulatory compliance
• Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.
• Wears proper identification while on duty.
