Job description

Position Description The Welder is responsible for laying out, fitting, and welding fabricated, cast, and forging components to create or repair structural assemblies such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, and building components. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and adherence to safety and quality standards. Duties and Responsibilities: Plan and select appropriate welding equipment, tools, and materials for each project.

Lay out, position, align, and fit components to precise specifications. Secure parts using bolts, clamps, or tack welds prior to final welding. Perform welding using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc, or gas welding techniques.

Assemble components using bolting or riveting methods. Repair and refurbish products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts. Inspect workpieces for defects and verify measurements to ensure compliance with specifications.

Detect faulty equipment operation or defective materials and escalate issues promptly. Safely operate hand and power tools used in welding, including shielded metal arc and gas metal arc equipment. Perform preventive maintenance on welding equipment and tools.

Assist with structural repairs on facilities or field equipment. Maintain accurate records of materials, completed welds, inspections, and repairs. Collaborate with mechanics, technicians, and supervisors on multi-step repair or fabrication projects.

Represent Precinct 4 with professionalism at all times, including assisting constituents. May be required to work before, during, or after emergency or disaster events at the department's discretion. This position is subject to a criminal history check. Only relevant convictions will be considered and, even when considered, may not automatically disqualify the candidate. Requirements Experience: Minimum of 1-3 years of professional welding or metal fabrication experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong understanding of production processes, raw materials, quality control methods, and cost-efficiency practices. Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with welding tools, machines, and maintenance needs. Ability to weld in various positions: flat, vertical, and overhead.

Commitment to safe work habits and proper use of safety equipment. Precision measurement skills using straightedges, templates, or other tools. Ability to identify defects or irregularities in materials and equipment.

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Effective communication and teamwork abilities.

Dependability and strong time-management skills. Ability to perform all essential duties satisfactorily. Licensure: Valid Texas Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

Preferences Certification(s) such as AWS (American Welding Society) Certified Welder. Experience with MIG, TIG, and stick welding. Experience reading blueprints, technical schematics, and fabrication drawings.

Prior work in municipal operations, field service, or heavy equipment environments. Experience with weld quality testing (visual, ultrasonic, or dye penetrant). Ability to regularly lift up to 10 lbs., frequently lift up to 25 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Adequate vision abilities including close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment. Ability to work extended hours, including occasional nights, weekends, or emergency activations

Ability to work in difficult environmental conditions (heat, cold, confined spaces).
