A counseling psychologist works with patients as a mental health professional to improve their emotional, social, and cognitive health. Your job duties are to meet regularly with patients for therapy sessions and teach your patients coping strategies for behavioral issues and mental health disorders. This includes anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and depression. You need strong active-listening skills and good communication skills to be effective in this career. In addition to your counseling duties, you may conduct research in clinical or laboratory settings.
| Aspect | Counseling Psychologist | Clinical Psychologist |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.), licensure | Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.), licensure |
| Work Environment | Schools, outpatient clinics, private practice | Hospitals, mental health clinics, private practice |
| Focus | Adjustment issues, life challenges, everyday problems | Severe mental health disorders, psychological testing |
| Employer & Industry | Educational institutions, outpatient services | Healthcare facilities, hospitals, clinics |
While both Counseling Psychologists and Clinical Psychologists hold similar credentials and work environments, Counseling Psychologists primarily focus on helping clients manage everyday life issues and mild to moderate mental health concerns. Clinical Psychologists often work with more severe mental health disorders and conduct psychological assessments. Understanding these differences can help you choose the right career path or service provider.
