What are Counseling Practicum Students?

Counseling practicum students are individuals who are currently enrolled in a graduate counseling program and are completing a supervised, hands-on training experience as part of their degree requirements. During their practicum, these students work with real clients under the supervision of a licensed counselor, applying the theories and techniques they've learned in the classroom. The practicum allows students to develop professional counseling skills, gain practical experience, and receive feedback to improve their competence before graduating and pursuing full licensure.

Counseling Practicum Students typically receive regular supervision from licensed professionals, such as counselors or psychologists, who mentor and guide them throughout their placement. Supervision often includes weekly one-on-one meetings, case reviews, and opportunities to discuss challenges encountered with clients. Feedback is constructive, focusing on skill development, ethical practice, and professional growth. Practicum students can also expect group supervision sessions, peer discussions, and opportunities to observe experienced counselors, all of which help them build confidence and competence in real-world counseling settings.
