Council On Aging information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Council on Aging professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Council on Aging professional, you need a background in social work, gerontology, or public health, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with case management software, senior services databases, and knowledge of government assistance programs is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and advocacy abilities help build trust with older adults and their families. These skills ensure effective support, resource coordination, and improved quality of life for seniors in the community.

What is a Council on Aging?

A Council on Aging is a local or regional organization dedicated to supporting the needs and well-being of older adults in the community. These councils typically provide resources, advocacy, and a variety of services such as meal programs, transportation, social activities, and assistance with healthcare or housing. Their goal is to help seniors maintain independence, stay active, and access the support they need as they age. Councils on Aging often collaborate with local governments, nonprofits, and healthcare providers to fulfill their mission.

What are some common challenges faced when working with older adults at a Council on Aging, and how can team members address them?

Working at a Council on Aging often involves supporting older adults who may experience challenges such as social isolation, mobility limitations, or navigating complex healthcare and social services. Team members frequently collaborate to assess needs, coordinate resources, and provide emotional support. Building trust, practicing patience, and staying informed about available community resources are key strategies for overcoming these challenges and ensuring seniors receive comprehensive, compassionate care.

Job description

Are you organized, comfortable with computers and talking on the phone, and able to work well as part of a team? If so, we would love for you to come and volunteer with us! Pima Council on Aging is the area agency on aging, and we serve seniors so they can safely age at home. We have lots of programs that help us achieve this important goal, and each department could benefit from someone like you. From filing, to data entry, to phone calls, to organizing, the administrative help you provide will help us to serve our clients better. If you are bilingual (English/Spanish), that is a plus, but it is not required.

Because we serve a vulnerable population, we do require a background check and Level 1 fingerprint clearance card (which we will pay for). PLEASE NOTE: PCOA does not provide court-ordered volunteer opportunities.

Join us today, and help us serve Pima County's senior population!
