What is a cosmetology internship?

A Cosmetology Internship is a hands-on training opportunity for students or aspiring cosmetologists to gain real-world experience in a salon or spa setting. Interns assist licensed professionals with tasks such as shampooing, styling, applying treatments, sanitizing tools, and customer service. This internship helps develop technical skills, industry knowledge, and client interaction experience. It also provides a chance to network with professionals and fulfill state licensing requirements, if applicable.

What tasks and responsibilities can I expect during a cosmetology internship?

Cosmetology Interns typically assist with a range of salon tasks, including shampooing, blow-drying, sanitation of tools and workstations, and observing or helping with haircuts, coloring, and styling under supervision. You may also greet clients, schedule appointments, and support licensed cosmetologists with their daily routines. This experience offers hands-on exposure to real-world salon workflows, customer interactions, and professional standards. By actively participating in these activities, interns gain valuable skills, industry knowledge, and connections that can pave the way for future employment as a licensed cosmetologist.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive in a cosmetology internship?

To thrive as a Cosmetology Intern, you need foundational knowledge of beauty treatments, hair and skin care techniques, and strong manual dexterity, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of a cosmetology program. Familiarity with salon tools such as shears, brushes, styling products, and state-specific trainee permits or licenses is important. Excellent communication, a willingness to learn, attention to detail, and customer service orientation are standout soft skills in this position. These attributes ensure clients receive quality service, contribute to a positive salon environment, and help interns build the hands-on experience needed for a successful cosmetology career.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
