Job description

GENERAL PURPOSE
This position is responsible for maintenance of indoor and outdoor facilities at Cosley Zoo.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Minimum of eighteen (18) years of age and a high school graduate or equivalent. Knowledge and experience in construction trades, landscaping, and janitorial services preferred. Must have excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills and time management skills.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Attendance at work site required as scheduled.
  2. Effectively use all available resources, materials, supplies, and equipment.
  3. Monitor for and perform routine preventive maintenance to exhibits, buildings, grounds, assigned vehicles and equipment, including hand and power tools, or report repairs as needed.
  4. Maintains high cleanliness standards of zoo buildings and grounds for both internal and external customers. This includes garbage collection and disposal, washroom cleaning, rental and classroom facility maintenance, removal of debris from pathways, etc.
  5. Assist with building trades' projects (plumbing, carpentry, electrical, mechanical repair, and specialty tools for the animal care department).
  6. Maintain effective two-way communication with supervisor and zoo staff, and interacting in a friendly and professional manner.
  7. Work effectively as a team with zoo staff.
  8. Operate skid-steer, pick-up truck, hand and power tools and equipment if necessary.
  9. Interact courteously with public to provide education, information, assistance, and control to enforce the policies and procedures of the District and the Zoo.
  10. Complete snow and ice removal throughout the zoo and the adjacent administration building.
  11. Assist with the inventory, receipt, and storage of custodial and maintenance supplies.
  12. Submit and maintain accurate records and reports.
  13. Assist in monitoring and quality control of water features.
  14. Transport equipment and supplies as necessary
  15. Wear personal protective equipment for job function when needed.
  16. Provide a high quality of customer service in a professional manner to the internal customer that will facilitate team building and exceptional customer service to the external customer.
  17. Follow the Wheaton Park District policies, procedures, and guidelines.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC
Must have and maintain: a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record; and CPR/AED certified or obtain within one (1) year of employment. This position must also have a current Mandated Reporter certificate.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to: frequently move about the facility on uneven ground; occasionally move items such as construction materials, cleaning products, etc. up to 50 lbs. for up to 25 yards and over 50 lbs. with assistance, and position one's self to perform maintenance and repairs, work on ladders and elevated surfaces, move on uneven ground, and grasp tools with repetitive use of hands/fingers/arms with good eye/hand coordination.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to: frequently work in all weather conditions including, rain, snow, extreme heat and cold, with fumes, gases, odors, dust, mold, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, grease, oil, mud, poisonous plants, animal hair/dander/feces, and biting/stinging bugs and insects; occasionally wet, slippery and uneven surfaces; and rarely at heights over 12 feet with noise over 85 dbls. and in confined spaces.

7:00am-2:30 pm, Weds. - Saturday
SALARY
$16.00 - $18.00 per hour DOQ
SALARY RANGE
Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum
$15.00 - $18.75 - $22.50
