What is corrugated packaging design?

Corrugated packaging design refers to the process of creating boxes, cartons, and other packaging solutions using corrugated fiberboard, which is a sturdy, layered material. Designers focus on structuring the packaging to protect products during shipping and storage, while also considering branding, cost efficiency, and sustainability. This involves making decisions about box shape, size, strength, and print graphics to meet customer and industry requirements. Effective corrugated packaging design helps ensure products arrive safely and can enhance the customer’s unboxing experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Corrugated Packaging Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Corrugated Packaging Designer, you need expertise in structural design, materials knowledge, and proficiency in packaging engineering, often supported by a degree in industrial design or packaging science. Familiarity with CAD software (such as ArtiosCAD), Adobe Creative Suite, and understanding of manufacturing processes are typically required. Strong creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help designers meet client needs and collaborate with production teams. These skills are crucial to creating cost-effective, sustainable, and functional packaging solutions that protect products and support brand objectives.
