How much do corn breeding research jobs pay per year?

As of May 29, 2026, the average yearly pay for corn breeding research in the United States is $104,262.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $87,500.00 and $121,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Corn Breeding Research, and why are they important?

Success in Corn Breeding Research requires a solid background in plant genetics, agronomy, and statistical analysis, usually backed by a degree in plant science or a related field. Familiarity with breeding software, molecular marker technologies, and laboratory as well as field data collection systems is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help researchers excel in this collaborative and data-driven environment. These competencies are vital for developing improved corn varieties, advancing agricultural productivity, and ensuring research integrity.

What are some common challenges faced in a corn breeding research role, and how can they be addressed?

Corn breeding researchers often face challenges such as managing large field trials across diverse environments, accurately collecting and analyzing data, and keeping up with advances in genetic technologies. Unpredictable weather, pest outbreaks, and logistical constraints can also impact the research process. To address these challenges, professionals typically use robust experimental designs, collaborate closely with agronomists and data analysts, and continuously update their skills in molecular breeding techniques. Teamwork and adaptability are essential for overcoming unexpected obstacles and ensuring successful breeding outcomes.

What is corn breeding research?

Corn breeding research is the scientific study and development of new corn varieties with improved traits, such as higher yield, disease resistance, drought tolerance, and better nutritional value. Researchers use traditional breeding techniques as well as modern genetic tools to cross different corn plants and evaluate their offspring. The goal is to create corn hybrids that are better suited to specific growing conditions and market needs, ultimately supporting food security and agricultural sustainability.

What is the difference between Corn Breeding Research vs Corn Geneticist?

AspectCorn Breeding ResearchCorn Geneticist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Agronomy, Plant Science, or GeneticsBachelor's or Master's in Genetics, Plant Biology, or related field
Work EnvironmentResearch farms, laboratories, field trialsLaboratories, research institutions, field sites
Industry UsageDeveloping new corn varieties, improving yieldAnalyzing genetic traits, gene mapping in corn
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for research roles in corn developmentRelated genetic analysis roles in corn breeding

While both Corn Breeding Research and Corn Geneticist roles involve genetics and plant science, Corn Breeding Research focuses on developing new corn varieties through field trials and breeding programs. Corn Geneticists primarily analyze genetic traits and perform gene mapping. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work environments, but their specific focus areas differ within the corn industry.
