Construction Observer

Job Summary: The Construction Observer will be capable of learning how to read and understand contract documents, prepare and produce daily reports, observe and understand construction techniques and procedures, and quantify and record contract pay items. To be considered for this position, you must have at least 2 years of related experience in Materials Testing or Field Inspection. We are seeking qualified individuals capable of performing construction inspection and reporting for underground utility, road or bridge construction projects.

On a given day your work might include:

  • Ensuring communication with project managers, design professionals, contractors, and clients' by making recommendations and pointing out potential problems
  • Informing project manager, contractors, clients, and design professionals of the progress or delays of a project
  • Reading and interpreting construction plans, blueprints, and maps
  • Evaluating and reviewing plans and specifications for the job site to be inspected
  • Managing deadlines, while prioritizing assignments and preparing final documentation reports
  • Performing on-site Density and Concrete testing on an as needed basis

  • Assuring quality of contractor work and compliance with plan specifications and standards for inspection site
  • Keeping record and filing documents and project files for the organization during the duration of the project's lifecycle

The Ideal Candidate Possesses:

  • 2+ years of related work experience
  • The ability to be adaptable under changing priorities
  • Basic computer skills (Required)
  • Proficient with basic math (e.g. calculating areas and volumes)
  • Familiarity with MDOT FieldBook software / AASHTOWare (Preferred)
  • Past experience with MDOT-related construction projects
  • MDOT Density, MCA Concrete, MDOT HMA Paving, Storm Water Operator preferred
  • A valid Driver's License - Will be traveling to Field Sites in Southwest Michigan
