About the Role

Under minimal supervision, the Controls Engineer IV is a senior technical role responsible for leading the development and deployment of highly complex control systems for large-scale material handling automation. This position owns technical delivery across the project lifecycle, drives standardization and innovation, and mentors others across the engineering team. Controls Engineer IVs serve as the lead controls resource on major customer programs and strategic initiatives.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

System Architecture & Standardization

  • Architect large-scale, multi-system PLC and HMI solutions.
  • Establish and enforce standard code structures, HMI templates, and best practices across projects.
  • Lead refinement and documentation of internal engineering standards.

Technical Leadership & Execution

  • Lead the design, programming, testing, and commissioning of high-performance control systems.
  • Develop optimized logic for complex sortation, merging, and advanced sequencing applications.
  • Own FAT and SAT execution plans and lead teams during site commissioning.
  • Solve advanced integration challenges across multiple hardware platforms and system interfaces.

Team Development & Mentorship

  • Serve as a technical mentor and escalation point for Controls Engineers I–III.
  • Drive formal knowledge transfer through documentation, process improvement, and training sessions.
  • Participate in interviewing, onboarding, and professional development of new team members.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Coordinate technical integration across Electrical, Mechanical, and Software Engineering disciplines.
  • Provide technical leadership during project planning and design reviews.
  • Represent the controls function in cross-departmental initiatives and leadership meetings.

Strategic Growth & Innovation

  • Evaluate and pilot emerging control technologies, platforms, and methodologies.
  • Support the development of automation strategies including virtual commissioning, digital twins, and analytics.
  • Contribute to innovation efforts tied to business scalability, efficiency, and technology differentiation.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field.
  • 7+years of experience in industrial controls engineering, including lead project responsibilities.

Other Key Skills

  • AdvancedproficiencyinRSLogix5000/Studio 5000, TIA Portal, and HMI platforms (Ignition, FactoryTalk View).
  • Proven ability to optimize PLC logic for performance and maintainability.
  • Experience with industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet), VFDs, servo drives, and safety systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and guide junior engineers.
  • Willingness to travel (up to35%) to support installations and startups.
  • Excellent communication, technical documentation, and team collaboration skills.
