Job description

Beehive Industries is dedicated to Powering American Defense by revolutionizing the design, development, and delivery of jet propulsion systems to support the warfighter. Through the integration of additive manufacturing, the company aims to meet the growing and urgent needs for unmanned aerial defense by dramatically improving a jet engine's speed to market, fuel efficiency, and cost.
Founded in 2020, the company is headquartered in Centennial, Colorado, with additional facilities in Knoxville, Tennessee, Loveland Ohio, and Mount Vernon, Ohio. Beehive is committed to grow and advance the defense industrial base while manufacturing exclusively in the USA. This role can be located at our Centennial, Colorado or Loveland, Ohio facility.
Role Overview
Beehive Industries is looking for an energetic and driven Principal Engineer, Controls Hardware to specify, develop, integrate, and test gas turbine engine control system sensors, actuators, and accessories. This role will partner with various cross-functional leadership on a daily basis facilitating development and delivery of the overall engine control system.
What You'll Do...
  • Execute the design, analysis, and evaluation of the hardware for an aviation engine control system. This includes setting engine control hardware requirements, designing actuators and pumps for the engine control, integrating and iterating with engine software design and analysis, predicting and simulating engine performance or control logic with computer tools and component tests, and formally issuing the hardware design for an engine control system
  • Experience designing, procuring, and validating electronic engine control (EEC) and full authority digital engine control (FADEC) systems in addition to sensors, fuel systems, lube components, and other auxiliary systems. Lead software and hardware in the loop simulator design, commissioning and integration testing. Integrate engine performance and control system models into the hardware/software simulator to predict and validate engine performance and operability. Support setting software requirements and designs which enable the engine control hardware to meet requirements
  • Lead engine system or component test programs from a controls hardware perspective. Set test objectives and limits, instrumentation and test data requirements, and test planning to validate the engine design
  • Serve as the engine control hardware subject matter expert as part of a diverse system design team. Ensure the engine meets overall requirements from a design perspective. Coordinate with performance, operability, transient, mechanical and aero engineers to optimize the overall engine control system
  • Lead design reviews and coordinate with other disciplines in design, performance, controls, stress and life, additive manufacturing, materials and system analysis
  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments
  • Participate in the research and development of technologies and methodologies associated with additive design. Advise on ways to improve product design through the exploitation of additive manufacturing
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated consistent with engineering best practices

You have...
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited university or college
  • At least 12+ years of experience in engine control systems
  • Strong understanding of engine control tools (Matlab, etc.)
  • Electronics design, to include PCB layout and design
  • Experience with electric motors
  • Experience working on/creating enclosures
  • Experience with power electronics for Brushless DC (BLDC) motors
  • Passion for additive technology and willingness to challenge current design limitations to further exploit the benefits of additive capability
  • Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability and strong program leadership and execution skills
  • Proven self-starter and quick learner who can work in fast-paced cross-functional teams
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. Citizenship is required, as only U.S. Citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Nice to have...
  • Experience with electric machine design
  • Experience working with additive manufacturing technologies and familiarity with design for additive manufacturing principles
