Job Title: Instrumentation and Controls Engineer
Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to design, develop, modify, and evaluate instrumentation and control systems used in various industrial applications. This role involves working on the design of process systems and mechanical equipment in nuclear power plants, nuclear fuel enrichment and processing plants, chemical plants, refineries, and power plants. The position requires familiarity with QA standards such as NQA-1, 10CFR50, and 10CFR21.

Responsibilities

  • Design and engineer instrumentation and control (I&C) and electrical systems.
  • Prepare design and procurement specifications, design basis documents, system descriptions, proposals, whitepapers, trade studies, models, and drawings including schematics, wiring diagrams, and control logic diagrams.
  • Develop and deliver presentations to colleagues, customers, and management.
  • Work on motion control engineering, control system design, PLC programming, and HMI development using Rockwell Automation RSLogix/Studio 5000.
  • Select components and equipment based on analysis of specifications and reliability.
  • Review vendor capabilities to support product development.
  • Utilize computer-assisted engineering, design, and modeling software and equipment, including MATLAB.
  • Apply principles of electrical, mechanical, and mechatronics engineering to accomplish goals.
  • Address complex issues requiring in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
  • Possibly supervise the activities of others.
Essential Skills
  • Proficiency in instrumentation, PLC programming, controls engineering, and HMI development.
  • Experience with hardware cabinet design, wiring lists, and sensor selection.
  • Ability to create CAD drawings (AutoCAD or similar).
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and principles.
  • Strong technical writing skills for preparing design and procurement specifications, and other technical documents.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Programs (Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Experience in commercial, DOE, or nuclear sectors is a plus.
  • Competence in PLC programming and HMI design using Rockwell Automation RSLogix/Studio 5000.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with Electrical Analysis packages such as ETAP or SKM for various studies.
  • Knowledge of industry standards NFPA 70, NFPA 70E, NFPA 79, and UL 508A.
  • Certified UL-508A Manufacturer Technical Representative (MTR) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with EMI MIL standards, ISA, NUREGs, IEEE grounding standards, IEEE color books, IEC and DOE electrical standards.
  • Ability to conceptualize electrical design for nuclear and non-nuclear projects.
  • Ability to prepare engineering and design documents with NQA-1, 10CFR50 Appendix B rigor.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborative work environments.
  • Successful completion of NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Exam preferred.
  • Willingness to acquire PE license is a strong plus.
Work Environment

This position is onsite in Huntsville, AL. The organization operates in a matrix structure, with core hours from 9am to 3pm and flexible working hours. While no immediate travel is required, there might be a temporary assignment in Wyoming.
