The Opportunity

The Controls Engineer serves as a senior technical expert responsible for the design, development, integration, and optimization of advanced control systems supporting mission-critical manufacturing operations and modular infrastructure. This role provides technical leadership across PLC, BMS, SCADA, and HMI systems, ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient operation of automated equipment and production processes.

As a senior contributor, this position leads complex automation initiatives, drives engineering standards, supports cross-functional teams, and mentors controls and automation personnel. The Controls Engineer plays a key role in improving system reliability, operational efficiency, and scalability across Integra’s manufacturing and deployment environments.

What you will do?

Advanced Controls & Automation Engineering

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of complex control systems, including PLC, SCADA, and HMI solutions for manufacturing and mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Develop control system architectures, logic, and configurations that support reliability, redundancy, and safe operation.
  • Design, program, test, and validate PLC applications using ladder logic, structured text, or function block programming.
  • Optimize automation solutions to improve throughput, reduce downtime, and enhance overall system performance.

System Integration & Technical Leadership

  • Serve as a technical authority for controls system integration with manufacturing equipment, power systems, and enterprise platforms such as MES and data historians.
  • Lead integration efforts with mechanical, electrical, IT, and production teams to ensure seamless system interoperability.
  • Review and approve control system designs, logic, and documentation produced by other engineers or integrators.
  • Provide expert-level troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex automation and controls issues.

Project Leadership & Execution

  • Lead controls-focused projects from concept through deployment, including scope definition, scheduling, technical coordination, and commissioning support.
  • Support budgeting, vendor coordination, and equipment selection related to automation and controls systems.
  • Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning activities.

Standards, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure control systems comply with applicable safety standards, industry codes, and company policies.
  • Support development and enforcement of controls engineering standards, best practices, and documentation requirements.
  • Promote functional safety, reliability, and cybersecurity considerations within control system designs.

Documentation, Training & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain detailed system documentation including control narratives, wiring diagrams, I/O lists, network architecture, and operating procedures.
  • Provide training and technical support to manufacturing, maintenance, and operations personnel.
  • Identify opportunities to improve automation workflows, system performance, and engineering efficiency.
  • Perform other related duties as required to support mission-critical operations and business objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field (required).
  • 8+ years of progressive controls or automation engineering experience (required).

  • Advanced degrees or equivalent professional experience preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred).
  • Controls or automation certifications (Niagara 4, ComAp, Distech, Ignition, or equivalent) preferred.
  • Project Management (PMP) certification (plus).
  • Knowledge in the area of Networking, lAN and VLAN applications preferred.
  • Functional Safety or cybersecurity certifications (optional)
