Job description

Company Overview:
Crane Cryogenics designs and manufactures highly engineered products: including vacuum jacketed Pipe, Valves and Fittings (PVF) solutions for the production, transportation, transfer, and storage of cryogenic fluids.
Backed by 170 years of field experience and operations in severe service applications, Crane offers rewarding careers for those who thrive on challenges and seek to grow within an organization.
Why This Role is a Great Opportunity:
  • Hands-on experience creating real designs that are built in production
  • Direct exposure to fabrication, welding, and manufacturing processes
  • Development of strong CAD, drafting, and engineering interpretation skills
  • Opportunity to expand into design ownership, project engineering, or manufacturing engineering roles over time
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers and collaboration with shop-floor teams

Position Summary:
The Design Engineer is responsible for creating detailed CAD models and drawings used in the manufacturing of piping spools and related assemblies. This is an entry-level role focused on translating engineering requirements into accurate, production-ready designs with guidance from the Mechanical Design Manager, Technical Sales Representative, Project Engineer, or Engineering Manager.
This position works closely with manufacturing, welding, and project teams to ensure designs are practical, buildable, and aligned with shop capabilities. It is ideal for candidates who enjoy CAD work and want to see their designs move quickly from concept to production.
Principle Responsibilities:
  • Aids in the creation and refinement of technical drawings for mechanical parts, equipment, dies, tooling, controls, and assemblies to capture design intent and to accomplish the manufacturing goals of a project.
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings of piping spools and assemblies using CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)
  • Generate accurate fabrication drawings including dimensions, weld symbols, bill of materials (BOM), and details required for manufacturing
  • Interpret engineering specifications, customer requirements, and project documentation
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and welding teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable
  • Revise drawings based on redlines, engineering changes, and shop feedback
  • Maintain drawing accuracy, revision control, and documentation standards
  • Support project execution by delivering drawings on time and in alignment with schedules
  • Assist in developing standard drawing practices, templates, and design guidelines
  • Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback into final deliverables
  • Gain familiarity with applicable industry standards, piping practices, and weld detailing

Qualifications / Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field
  • 0-2 years of experience (internships, co-ops, or academic projects acceptable)
  • Proficiency in CAD software highly desired (SolidWorks or AutoCAD preferred)
  • Basic understanding of engineering drawings, dimensions, and tolerancing
  • Familiarity with piping systems or fabrication concepts is a plus (not required)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate technical drawings
  • Good communication skills and willingness to collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Team player and coachable
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Physical Demands
