Job Summary

The Controls Engineer will work on projects to improve plant safety, capacity, efficiency, reliability, and work environment for operational employees, and provide Controls System support to operations. The Plant Controls Engineer will work closely with operations, maintenance, and other engineering disciplines at the sites in DE, NJ, NY and possibly others, as well as corporate engineering and management.

This role will provide support for four plants.

Job Location

This is an onsite role based at our Dover, DE plant.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage Capital Projects.
  • Design, develop, improve and maintain control systems that can automate processes, including safety systems.
  • Participate in gathering and documenting plant requirements for Controls and Automation systems through interviews, documentation analysis and Workflow Process Mapping.
  • Selection and installation of hardware and development of software for control equipment and support of existing controls.
  • Create input/output (I/O) count and assignments, instrument loop diagrams, instrument datasheets and sizing, instrument uninterruptible power source (UPS) load requirements lists.
  • Develop, program anything that needs to be programmed for controls, optimize PLC and HMI programming, include all logic and control requirements to match all mechanical system features and specifications requirements.
  • Ensuring that the control system process works safely and efficiently in accordance with specifications.
  • Perform sizing calculations for inline instruments.
  • Prepare electrical & line drawings. Using CAD software (EPLAN).
  • Overseeing installation of equipment.
  • Troubleshoot problems with processes and hardware.
  • Provides technical assistance testing, maintaining and modifying existing systems as needed by the plant.
  • Train and support operational and technical staff and provide documentation.
  • Analyze control & electrical data and present findings.
  • Understanding and ensuring compliance with relevant code & regulations and quality standards.
  • Assist Manufacturing and Maintenance in the use and support of Electrical, Controls and other systems.
  • Ensure project completion on-time and within budget by tracking all project activities and providing management reports showing task status on requests.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance and engineering teams.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3 plus years of controls experience.
  • Allen Bradley Contrologix PLC Programming: Ladder, SFC, UDT, PID, AOI.
  • HMI Development, OPC, Alarms and Events, Datalogging, historical data.
  • VFD (Variable Frequency Device), Servo experience. 
  • Manufacturing Execution System experience.
  • Electrical standards and NEC/NFPA.
  • Networks, and industrial networking: Ethernet/IP, Controlnet, Devicenet.
  • Machine, Control panel wiring, schematics, panel layouts.
  • Excellent project management and planning skills.
  • Occasional after-hours call answering and holiday coverage.
  • Travel approximately up to 50% of the time, depending on requirements.
  • B+R PLC experience is a bonus.
  • EPLAN experience is a bonus.
