Under the leadership of the CFO, the Controller, as a senior-level financial leader, manages the day-to-day operations of the agency’s accounting operations including development of internal control policies and procedures with oversight of Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and General Ledger. About Alternative Family Services
Alternative Family Services is a Foster Family, Adoption and Mental Health Agency that has been serving abused and neglected children in our community since 1973. Our mission is to support vulnerable children and families in need of stability, safety, and well-being in communities. We provide a wide range of foster, adoption, mental health and transition-aged youth services in English and Spanish. We have eight locations throughout the Bay Area and 200 employees. Responsibilities
  • Manages all accounting operations including Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, General Ledger, Payroll, complex Cost Allocations and Revenue Recognition
  • Manages the monthly and year-end financial close
  • Reviews monthly balance sheet account reconciliations
  • Establishes and maintains internal control policies and agency-wide financial policy and procedures
  • Collaborates with Finance Planning amp; Analysis (FP amp;A) Manager and team in monthly financial reviews and analysis contributing to the agency’s budget and forecasting processes.
  • Supports agency stakeholders (client, families, staff, program management and funders)
  • Coordinates external audit managing the relationship with external auditors
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory bodies, funder requirements and agency policy
  • Leads the accounting department continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives promoting a culture of learning and staff development
  • Executes agency’s strategic objectives that fall within the accounting and finance domains.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting
  • Proven working experience as a Financial Controller
  • 8+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience preferably in a non-profit setting
  • Advance knowledge of finance and accounting theory including preparation of financial statements prepared under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Uniform Guidance.
  • Proficient knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems, Sage Intacct knowledge a plus
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills; ability to inspire, motivate, reward and develop accounting staff
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Tools
  • Proficient working knowledge working with databases and data analysis
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work well with staff, foster resource families and community partners from culturally, linguistically and socio-economically diverse communities
  • High level of discretion and business ethics.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) highly desirable
  • Valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and auto insurance showing as an insured driver on the policy
