What is a controller?

A controller is high-level accounting position in a firm or company. They often report directly to the CFO (Chief Financial Officer) and are responsible for budgets, audits, and financial reports, as well as ensuring the company complies with all tax codes and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and often a CPA certification. Proficiency with ERP systems, advanced Excel, and financial reporting software is essential for managing complex financial data. Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top Controllers apart. These skills and qualities ensure accurate financial oversight, compliance, and strategic decision-making for organizational success.

Staying current with evolving accounting standards and regulatory requirements can also be demanding, as it requires continual learning and adaptation. Additionally, Controllers must coordinate closely with cross-functional teams, such as auditors and department heads, to address discrepancies and streamline processes, making strong communication and problem-solving skills essential.

Controller

Location: Denver, CO; Hybrid  |  Reports to: President  |  Type: Full-Time, Exempt

About Topo Designs

Topo Designs is a Denver-based outdoor and lifestyle brand built on the idea that great design and genuine function aren’t mutually exclusive. Since 2008, we’ve made bags, apparel, and accessories for people who move through the world with intention — whether that’s a mountain trail or a city street. We’re a team of builders, adventurers, and problem-solvers, and we take both the work and the play seriously.

The Opportunity

Topo Designs is looking for a Controller to own the day-to-day accounting operations of the company and serve as the financial backbone of our finance team. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who brings both technical accounting depth and the organizational rigor to keep a growing consumer brand’s books clean, accurate, and audit-ready. You’ll report to the VP of Operations and work closely with leadership across the company to deliver timely financial information that drives better decisions.

What You’ll Own

Accounting Operations

  • Own the month-end and year-end close process — ensuring it’s completed accurately, on time, and well-documented
  • Maintain and enforce the company’s accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely processing and collections
  • Manage payroll processing in coordination with HR, ensuring accuracy and compliance
  • Maintain the chart of accounts, general ledger integrity, and an orderly accounting filing system
  • Perform and oversee periodic bank reconciliations and ensure all required debt payments are made on time

Financial Reporting

  • Produce timely, accurate, and complete financial statements on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis
  • Develop and track financial and operational metrics; calculate variances from budget and report material issues to leadership
  • Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process, including maintaining management cost reports
  • Provide financial analyses to support capital investment decisions, pricing strategy, and contract negotiations

Compliance & Audit

  • Coordinate with external auditors for the annual audit; prepare all supporting schedules and documentation
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with any debt covenants
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal reporting requirements, including tax filings

Systems & Team

  • Own accounting operations within NetSuite — ensuring data integrity, clean processes, and effective use of the platform
  • Lead and develop the accounting team, providing coaching, clarity, and accountability
  • Identify and implement process improvements that increase the efficiency and scalability of the finance function

What You Bring

  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally in consumer products, retail, or branded goods
  • CPA preferred; public accounting background a strong plus
  • Experience working with private equity backed companies preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and experience managing a full-cycle accounting close
  • Hands-on NetSuite experience preferred; comfort owning systems and driving process improvements
  • Experience managing AP, AR, payroll, and banking functions in a multi-channel business
  • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to zoom out and communicate financial results clearly to non-finance stakeholders
  • Collaborative, low-ego leadership style; you build trust through consistency and follow-through
  • Comfort operating in an entrepreneurial environment where you’re building infrastructure, not just maintaining it

Why Topo Designs

  • Be part of a beloved brand with a strong identity and loyal community
  • A seat at the table in a company where finance has real influence on business decisions
  • A culture that values craftsmanship, integrity, and a good sense of humor
  • Competitive compensation, benefits, and a generous product allowance
  • Denver-based with a team that actually loves what they make

Topo Designs is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
