Job description

Controller | Strategic Financial LeaderOne Stop Home Repair • Orono, MaineThis Isn’t a Traditional Controller Position.

If you’re looking for a role where your primary responsibility is closing the books each month, this probably isn’t the opportunity you’re looking for.

If you’re excited by helping build a company, improving profitability, developing business strategy, and partnering with leadership to drive growth, we’d like to talk with you.

One Stop Home Repair is seeking a Controller | Strategic Financial Leader to become a key member of our leadership team. This role goes far beyond accounting. We’re looking for someone who can transform financial information into better decisions, help improve operational performance, and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of our employee-owned company.

You’ll work directly with the President and leadership team, influencing decisions that affect every area of the business—from profitability and cash flow to operational efficiency and long-term growth.

Where We’re Going

One Stop Home Repair has built a strong reputation as one of central Maine’s leading residential service and remodeling companies. Today, we’re investing in the next stage of our growth.

Over the next three to five years, we’re focused on:

  • Growing our service and remodeling divisions responsibly

  • Improving operational efficiency through technology and data

  • Strengthening job costing and profitability management

  • Developing leaders throughout the organization

  • Building a scalable business that creates lasting value for our customers and our employee-owners

We’re looking for a financial leader who wants to help build that future—not simply report on it.

Why This Position Matters

The Controller is one of the most influential leadership positions in our company.

Your work won’t end with financial statements. You’ll help leadership understand what the numbers mean, identify opportunities for improvement, challenge assumptions, and guide decisions that strengthen the business.

Your ability to analyze financial performance, improve systems, and support operational excellence will directly impact profitability, cash flow, growth, and the long-term success of our employee-owned company.

This is a hands-on leadership position where you’ll both lead and execute. You’ll be expected to build strong financial processes while remaining actively involved in the day-to-day financial operations of the business.

What You’ll Help Lead

As our Strategic Financial Leader, you’ll partner with leadership to:

  • Improve profitability through financial analysis and business insight

  • Develop meaningful KPIs and performance dashboards

  • Strengthen budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management

  • Improve job costing and gross margin reporting

  • Support strategic planning and long-range business decisions

  • Identify operational efficiencies and continuous improvement opportunities

  • Develop scalable accounting systems and internal controls

  • Provide decision support for pricing, staffing, investments, and growth initiatives

  • Lead the accounting function while serving as a trusted business partner across the organization

What Success Looks Like During Your First Year

Within your first year, you’ll have helped us achieve measurable improvements such as:

  • Faster and more accurate month-end financial close

  • Improved visibility into job costing and gross margins

  • Better KPI reporting for leadership and operations

  • More reliable cash flow forecasting

  • Stronger internal controls and accounting processes

  • Actionable financial insights that improve business performance

  • Trusted partnership with leadership in making strategic decisions

What We’re Looking For

We’re searching for a business leader who happens to be an outstanding accountant.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field

  • Five or more years of progressive financial leadership experience

  • Experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Director of Finance, or similar leadership role

  • Experience in construction, home services, contracting, manufacturing, or another project-based business

  • Strong business judgment and analytical thinking

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills

  • A collaborative leadership style with a passion for continuous improvement

  • The ability to translate financial information into practical business decisions

CPA certification is welcomed but not required.

More important than any specific software platform is your ability to build systems, lead people, solve problems, and help the business make better decisions.

Employee Ownership Matters

One Stop Home Repair is an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) company.

That means your work helps build value not only for the business, but also for the employee-owners who share in its long-term success. As the company grows, employees have the opportunity to build meaningful retirement wealth through ownership—a benefit that reflects our belief that the people who help build the company should share in its success.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $100,000+ annually, depending on experience and qualifications.

In addition, we offer:

  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)

  • Health insurance

  • 401(k)

  • Paid vacation and holidays

  • Professional development opportunities

  • A collaborative leadership environment

  • Significant decision-making authority

  • The opportunity to help shape the future of a growing employee-owned company
