What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a control tower operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Control Tower Operator, you need strong situational awareness, quick decision-making, and a thorough understanding of air traffic regulations, often requiring completion of specialized FAA training and certification. Familiarity with radar systems, radio communication equipment, and air traffic management software is critical. Excellent communication, stress management, and teamwork skills help operators coordinate safely and efficiently in high-pressure environments. These abilities are crucial to ensure the safe and orderly movement of aircraft, minimizing risks and delays in air traffic operations.

What does a control tower operator do?

As a control tower operator or air traffic controller, you coordinate a variety of land and air vehicles in the air, on taxiways, and on runways. In this career, you spend the majority of your work day in the control tower, where you oversee the airplanes and other traffic you control. You are responsible for verifying flight plans, as well as giving takeoff and landing clearance orders to pilots. Control tower operators are regulated and managed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as you are responsible for the safety of commercial and private aircraft within the United States and international airspace under U.S. control.

What are the most common challenges faced by a control tower operator, and how can they be managed effectively?

Control Tower Operators often deal with high-pressure situations, such as coordinating multiple incoming and outgoing flights, managing unexpected weather changes, and ensuring clear communication between pilots and ground staff. Staying calm under pressure and being able to prioritize tasks quickly are essential skills. Effective use of technology, following established protocols, and maintaining strong teamwork with other air traffic controllers and airport personnel can help manage these challenges successfully.

What is a control tower operator?

Control Tower Operators are professionals responsible for overseeing and managing the movement of aircraft on the ground and in the airspace immediately surrounding an airport. They use radar, radios, and other communication tools to give pilots takeoff and landing instructions, provide weather updates, and coordinate safe aircraft traffic flow. Their role is crucial for ensuring airport operations run safely and efficiently, preventing collisions and minimizing delays. Control Tower Operators must remain alert at all times and be able to make quick decisions in fast-paced environments.

Job Description

The Role

ServiceNow's Digital Experience Strategy team operates at the intersection of product strategy and marketing -- where you define what gets built and why. This is pure product strategy: vision, direction, and strategic thinking that shapes digital experiences for a global enterprise AI leader.

ServiceNow launches new products constantly and acquires strategic companies regularly. This role owns two pillars: establishing how product launches reach buyers across our digital ecosystem, and building the playbook for integrating acquired companies' digital presence.

You write the strategy and requirements that guide how Product Marketing, UX, Engineering and M&A teams execute. You sit between product, marketing, and technology—translating strategic decisions into clear direction. You build organizational muscle around launch and integration discipline through frameworks and playbooks.

Key Responsibilities

M&A Digital Integration (70%)

  • The role is foundational — the playbooks, governance, and operating rhythms you build become how ServiceNow integrates every company it buys.
  • Drive M&A digital integration and marketing technology consolidation, unifying disparate properties into a single ecosystem
  • Partner with teams to assess operational readiness and execution risk: systems landscape, team capacity, process maturity, and the cost and timeline to remediate what you find
  • Develop the digital strategy for post-acquisition (login/portal integration, rebranding, tech stack decisions, customer community migration, portfolio positioning, site presence)
  • Create decision frameworks for integration trade-offs: Which assets stay separate? Which consolidate? How do we migrate customers without friction?
  • Establish integration priorities and sequencing with M&A, Product, and Legal teams
  • Partner on marketing technology decisions—consolidating lead management, CRM integration, analytics stacks
  • Create clarity in terms of sequencing, priorities, trade-offs, and the escalations that keep workstreams unblocked
  • Write requirements and direct Product Managers and teams responsible for execution

Launches (30%)

  • Define horizontal launch strategy—transform how we showcase launches across our digital ecosystem, establishing what gets featured, how it's presented, and what doesn't make the cut
  • Create reusable launch playbooks that enable consistent, high-quality execution without reinventing each cycle
  • Define decision criteria for launch prominence and content refresh sequencing
  • Guide Product Marketing on what to showcase, how to present it, and where it belongs in the buyer journey
  • Use analytics and engagement metrics to validate strategy and refine execution
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in product management, consulting, product strategy, or digital experience strategy (Consulting backgrounds are welcome with a subsequent operating role)
  • Track record of M&A integration experience with ownership of integrations -- you built the plan (for consolidation decisions, product integrations, technical trade-offs), ran the cadence, and held stakeholders accountable
  • Strong operational judgment and ability to move between strategy and execution
  • Experience with product launches and leading major digital initiatives from strategy through execution
  • Strong stakeholder management—ability to influence senior leaders and drive alignment across product, marketing, and engineering
  • Comfortable managing multiple concurrent integrations and launches at different stages
  • Data-driven approach to strategy validation using analytics, research, and metrics
  • Technical literacy—comfort discussing API architecture, data migration, login/auth consolidation, deprecation trade-offs

Preferred Qualifications

  • UX experience or design sensibility
  • Experience applying AI tools to work
  • Experience leading digital transformation or rebranding initiatives
  • Familiarity with marketing technology stacks and lead management systems
