What is control panel design?

Control panel design is the process of planning and creating the layout, wiring, and components of electrical control panels used to operate and monitor machinery or systems. This involves selecting appropriate parts like switches, relays, circuit breakers, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), as well as ensuring safety, functionality, and compliance with industry standards. A well-designed control panel facilitates efficient operation, easy troubleshooting, and safe maintenance in industrial and commercial settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a control panel designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Control Panel Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, schematic design, and industry standards, typically supported by an engineering degree or relevant technical training. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN), knowledge of UL/IEC standards, and experience with PLCs and wiring diagrams are essential technical requirements. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring design accuracy and collaborating with project teams. These competencies are crucial for creating safe, efficient, and compliant control panels that meet client and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in control panel design, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals in Control Panel Design often face challenges such as ensuring compliance with industry standards, accommodating space constraints, and integrating diverse components from multiple vendors. Managing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, effective communication with project stakeholders, and up-to-date knowledge of relevant codes like UL or IEC. Collaboration with electrical engineers, suppliers, and installation teams is essential to address design changes and troubleshoot issues quickly, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.

What is the difference between Control Panel Design vs Electrical Panel Wiring?

AspectControl Panel DesignElectrical Panel Wiring
Primary FocusDesigning layout, components, and functionality of control panelsConnecting and wiring electrical components within panels
Skills RequiredElectrical design, CAD, understanding of control systemsElectrical wiring, circuit connections, troubleshooting
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, manufacturing facilitiesIndustrial sites, maintenance areas
CertificationsElectrical engineering, CAD certificationsElectrical wiring licenses, safety certifications

Control Panel Design involves creating the layout and functionality of control systems, while Electrical Panel Wiring focuses on physically connecting electrical components. Both roles require electrical knowledge but differ in their primary tasks and work environments.

Job description

Test Equipment Design Engineer, BMS Hardware

Job Number: 365568

Category: Design Engineering

Description: Job Title: Test Equipment Design Engineer, BMS Hardware
Pay Rate: Up to $ 75.18/hr. (DOE)
Location: Berkeley, CA
Zip Code: 94702
A Test Equipment Design Engineer, BMS Hardware job opportunity is available with our client in Berkeley, Ca. In this role, you will be the core technical engine partnering with our Technical Program Manager (TPM) to build the infrastructure required for critical UL 991 compliance and long-term BMS Reliability testing.

Job Duties

  • Architect, design, and lay out industrial control panels, power distribution systems, and safety interlock circuits required for high-channel-count BMS testing.

  • Create comprehensive electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) for test racks, integrating PLCs, data acquisition (DAQ) units, power supplies, and load banks.

  • Design robust hardware-level safety features, including E-stop circuits, thermal cutoffs, and isolation monitoring to handle automated, continuous testing safely.

  • Utilize 3D CAD to design custom mechanical fixtures, enclosures, and interface blocks used inside and outside environmental chambers to hold, connect, and probe BMS PCBAs.

  • Design and specify low-voltage signaling and high-current power wire harnesses, factoring in shielding, signal integrity, thermal dissipation, and industrial strain relief.

  • Rapidly design and deploy the specialized, highly repeatable test beds required by certification bodies to achieve UL 991 compliance.

  • Maximize design reuse by adapting the core UL 991 testbed architecture into a broader, scalable BMS Reliability testing platform.

Knowledge/Skills/Education

  • 3+ years of experience designing custom electromechanical test equipment, automated test equipment (ATE), or R&D/manufacturing test beds for complex electronics.

  • A degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical, or Robotics Engineering (or equivalent practical experience) showcasing a strong balance of electrical and mechanical design skills.

  • Proficiency with electrical schematic capture tools (e.g., EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, Altium) and 3D mechanical CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, NX, Inventor).

  • Familiarity with industrial control components (relays, contactors, PLCs, fuses, DAQ systems) and panel building best practices.

  • Comfortable using standard shop tools, soldering irons, wire crimpers, multimeters, and oscilloscopes to build, verify, and debug your own equipment.

  • Familiarity with industrial standards for panel design and safety (e.g., UL 508A, NFPA 79)
