What is control panel design?

Control panel design is the process of planning and creating the layout, wiring, and components of electrical control panels used to operate and monitor machinery or systems. This involves selecting appropriate parts like switches, relays, circuit breakers, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs), as well as ensuring safety, functionality, and compliance with industry standards. A well-designed control panel facilitates efficient operation, easy troubleshooting, and safe maintenance in industrial and commercial settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a control panel designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Control Panel Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, schematic design, and industry standards, typically supported by an engineering degree or relevant technical training. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN), knowledge of UL/IEC standards, and experience with PLCs and wiring diagrams are essential technical requirements. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring design accuracy and collaborating with project teams. These competencies are crucial for creating safe, efficient, and compliant control panels that meet client and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in control panel design, and how can they be managed effectively?

Professionals in Control Panel Design often face challenges such as ensuring compliance with industry standards, accommodating space constraints, and integrating diverse components from multiple vendors. Managing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, effective communication with project stakeholders, and up-to-date knowledge of relevant codes like UL or IEC. Collaboration with electrical engineers, suppliers, and installation teams is essential to address design changes and troubleshoot issues quickly, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.

What is the difference between Control Panel Design vs Electrical Panel Wiring?

AspectControl Panel DesignElectrical Panel Wiring
Primary FocusDesigning layout, components, and functionality of control panelsConnecting and wiring electrical components within panels
Skills RequiredElectrical design, CAD, understanding of control systemsElectrical wiring, circuit connections, troubleshooting
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, manufacturing facilitiesIndustrial sites, maintenance areas
CertificationsElectrical engineering, CAD certificationsElectrical wiring licenses, safety certifications

Control Panel Design involves creating the layout and functionality of control systems, while Electrical Panel Wiring focuses on physically connecting electrical components. Both roles require electrical knowledge but differ in their primary tasks and work environments.

Job description

Location: Berkeley, CA

We are hiring a Senior Control Panel Designer to impact development and validation of our groundbreaking battery technology. As part of our BMS Hardware & Electrical System team, you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of industrial control panel design - from component selection and schematic development through vendor coordination and high-voltage validation. You will work cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, and manufacturing teams to deliver panels that meet the highest safety and compliance standards. This is an exciting opportunity to help shape and be part of the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission!

Responsibilitiesย
ย  ย  Design the control panel panels in compliance with NEC (NFPA 70) and UL 508A standards
ย  ย  Develop complete control panel schematic, layout and BOM using EPLAN
ย  ย  Select appropriate control panel components including connectors, wire harnesses, branch circuit protection devices (breakers, fuses), and power conversion devices (drives, transformers, rectifiers)
ย  ย  Select components rated for 600V AC and 2000V DC high-voltage applications
ย  ย  Work directly with third-party panel vendors to translate design intent into built assemblies. Execute and oversee high-voltage testing procedures including hipot, insulation resistance, and functional validation
ย  ย  Collaborate with mechanical engineers on panel enclosure selection, thermal management, and physical integration
ย  ย  Support DFMEA activities for panel-level failure mode identification and risk mitigation

Qualificationsย
ย  ย  Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience; OR Master's degree with 3+ years of relevant experience
ย  ย  Proficiency in panel design SW EPLAN or equivalent
ย  ย  Demonstrated experience designing panels to NEC and UL 508A requirements
ย  ย  Hands-on experience in testing with high-voltage testing procedures and associated safety protocols
ย  ย  Strong working knowledge of branch protection coordination, wire sizing, and power conversion device integration
ย  ย  Experience managing third-party panel fabrication vendors through design, build, and acceptance phases
ย  ย  Familiarity with the SW including PLM (e.g. Arena or Team Center), product development SW (e.g. JIRA) and requirement management tools (e.g. JAMA)
ย  ย  Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work independently and cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment
