About the position

As the Prefabrication Designer, you will play a key role in advancing ArchKeyโ€™s prefabrication operations by developing detailed, code-compliant, and constructible design solutions that translate project intent into efficient prefabrication deliverables. This position supports both standard and advanced prefabrication applications, including wall rough, lighting control systems, conduit support systems, equipment assemblies, and electrical room build-outs. This role collaborates closely with project teams, field leadership, VDC, and prefabrication production teams to ensure all prefabrication documentation improves field efficiency, standardization, and quality, in alignment with company policies, procedures, key objectives, and applicable codes and regulations.

Day in the life

  • Prefabrication Design & Detailing:
    • Develops detailed prefabrication build sheets, layout drawings, riser diagrams, and assembly diagrams for wall rough, lighting control systems, and standard prefabrication packages and aAdvanced applications such as electrical rooms, conduit rack systems, and equipment assemblies.
    • Reviews construction drawings for NEC compliance, constructability, and alignment with prefabrication standards.
    • Utilizes Bluebeam and Excel to create, revise, and annotate prefabrication documentation; familiarity with AutoCAD or Revit is a plus.
    • Prepares material take-offs and supports procurement coordination for all prefabrication assemblies.
    • Maintains organized documentation, version control, and approval tracking for all design deliverables.
    • Partners closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and Prefabrication Shop teams to ensure prefab deliverables align with project goals and schedules.
    • Attends prefabrication, coordination, and planning meetings to support design intent, sequencing, and field efficiency.
    • Works with Prefabrication Shop Leads to optimize assembly layouts, build sequencing, and packaging for efficient delivery and installation.
    • Performs self-checks and participates in peer reviews prior to releasing design packages for production.
    • Ensures all prefabrication designs meet company standards, NEC requirements, and field constructability expectations.
  • Lighting Controls Detailing
    • Develops prefabrication build sheets, riser diagrams, and layouts for lighting control systems, including occupancy sensors, dimming systems, relay panels, and smart lighting devices.
    • Translates design intent from project documents into detailed, constructible prefabrication packages for lighting controls.
    • Coordinates with Procurement to verify material selections, substitutions, and lead times for lighting control components.
    • Ensures all lighting control documentation complies with NEC and project specifications.
    • Collaborates with other designers to ensure lighting control systems integrate seamlessly with related assemblies such as wall rough and power distribution.
  • Collaboration, Quality, and Continuous Improvement
    • Collaborates with VDC to incorporate redlines, as-built updates, and digital coordination models into prefabrication packages.
    • Gathers and documents field feedback and lessons learned to drive continuous improvement in prefabrication design quality and constructability.
    • Partners with Quality Coordinators and Lead Designers to align advanced prefabrication packages with company standards.
    • Contributes to the development and standardization of prefabrication assemblies and catalog items for reuse across projects and regions.
    • Provides technical guidance and mentorship to field, shop, and design personnel on prefabrication standards, tools, and best practices.
    • Identifies and develops new prefabrication opportunities that enhance safety, reduce labor hours, or improve installation efficiency.
  • Consistently makes decisions in an attentive and safe manner to ensure the safety and health of self and others.
  • Utilizes LEAN concepts or other continuous improvement methodologies to ensure the most efficient operations, processes, and activities.             
  • Promotes and models the Company mission, vision and values through exercising sound and ethical business practices, championing all elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and providing high quality services and programs as they relate to clients, subcontractors, co-workers, suppliers, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associateโ€™s or Bachelorโ€™s degree in Construction Technology, Electrical Design, or related experience.
  • Journeyman Inside Wireman certification or equivalent electrical field experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in electrical prefabrication, detailing, or design roles.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or other design/BIM software.
  • Prior experience supporting prefabrication shops, VDC coordination, or field installation teams.
  • Strong understanding of electrical installations, lighting control systems, prefabrication methods, and NEC requirements.
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam and Microsoft Excel; familiarity with Word and Outlook.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, one-line diagrams, specifications, and schematics.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deliverables with accuracy and efficiency.

  • Occasional travel is required as needed.
