Contractual Reverse Engineering information

Is reverse engineering illegal in the US?

Reverse engineering as a skill is legal in the US when performed for purposes such as interoperability, security research, or educational reasons, provided it does not violate copyright, patent, or trade secret laws. Contractual agreements and specific software licenses may restrict reverse engineering activities, so it is important for professionals to understand applicable legal boundaries and ethical standards in their work.

What is the difference between Contractual Reverse Engineering vs Software Developer?

Job description

Position Overview
The Product Owner, Core Commerce & Business Logic is accountable for the core transaction services that support a B2B eCommerce experience, including order processing, pricing rules, core/return charge workflows, and backend orchestration to ensure digital order states remain aligned with fulfillment operations.
The role operates within an ecosystem that includes an eCommerce platform (Spryker), dealer/distribution management systems (DMS/ERP), and an Azure-based integration layer. The Product Owner ensures end-to-end data and process integrity (e.g., inventory availability, customer-specific pricing, credit terms, and order acknowledgements) and maintains a prioritized backlog supported by clear requirements and acceptance criteria.
Responsibilities
Core commerce workflow ownership (order management, pricing, checkout, returns)
  • Order lifecycle design: Define and maintain end-to-end order workflows (states, transitions, exception handling, and timeouts) to ensure digital order status accurately reflects fulfillment and delivery operations.
  • B2B pricing requirements: Establish requirements for customer-specific and tiered pricing (contract pricing, fleet tiers, zone/branch price lists), promotional overrides, and the approach for pricing synchronization with back-office systems.
  • Checkout, tax, and returns: Define requirements and acceptance criteria for split shipments, tax handling, payment and credit-terms flows, and the full core/return charge lifecycle (deposit collection, return authorization, condition/grade capture, credit issuance, and reconciliation).

Systems integration and operational reliability (DMS/ERP and Azure integration layer)
  • Integration roadmap: Develop and prioritize the integration roadmap across back-office systems (e.g., CDK, Procede, SAP, Karmak), accounting for differences in APIs, data models, and deployment sequencing.
  • Middleware requirements: Define functional requirements for the Azure-based integration layer, including orchestration logic, retry and failure handling, monitoring/observability, and operational runbooks and alerting.
  • Operational performance: Define, monitor, and report KPIs for pricing and inventory synchronization accuracy, order acknowledgement latency, and workflow exception rates; drive continuous improvement initiatives with engineering and operations partners.

Backlog leadership and cross-functional alignment
  • Backlog management: Own and prioritize the core commerce backlog, balancing platform enhancements with partner team API and workflow requirements. Maintain visibility to cross-team dependencies and integration contracts.
  • Data integrity: Ensure critical upstream data (product attributes, fitment/compatibility, and customer/account rules) is validated and consumed correctly by the commerce engine to support accurate order processing.
  • Agile delivery: Lead Scrum ceremonies and translate complex integration initiatives into well-defined user stories with measurable outcomes, clear acceptance criteria, and appropriate edge-case coverage.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of technical project/program management experience
  • At least 1 years of lead experience

OR
  • Master's degree and at least 3 years of technical project/program management experience
  • At least 1 years of lead experience

OR
  • At least 8 years of technical project/program management experience
  • At least 1 years of lead experience

Additional Requirements
  • Qualified candidates, excluding current employees, must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. We do not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-1B status)

Desired Skills
Professional experience
  • 5+ years of experience in product management or product ownership, with significant responsibility for backend commerce, order management, and/or ERP/DMS integrations in a B2B environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of B2B commercial workflows, including contractual pricing, bulk ordering, approvals, credit terms, and reverse logistics/returns.
  • Experience within automotive, commercial vehicle, industrial distribution, or parts ecosystems is preferred; familiarity with CDK, Procede, Karmak, SAP, or comparable back-office platforms is advantageous.
  • Demonstrated success leading delivery within Scrum/Agile teams; CSPO or equivalent certification is preferred.

Technical skills
  • Working knowledge of modern commerce platforms and order management concepts (e.g., order workflows/state machines, APIs, and pricing and catalog modules); experience with Spryker is preferred.
  • Ability to partner effectively with engineering teams on REST APIs, data mapping, integration orchestration, database concepts, and performance considerations.
  • Proficiency with requirements documentation and backlog management tools (e.g., Jira and Confluence or comparable tools), including the development of clear user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred qualifications
  • Experience with Spryker (e.g., OMS/State Machine, APIs, and pricing modules) or similar composable commerce platforms.
  • Experience integrating with DMS/ERP platforms (e.g., CDK, Procede, Karmak, SAP) and/or Azure integration services.
  • Industry experience in parts distribution, fleet services, and/or complex returns and core charge processes.
