What is the difference between Contractor vs Freelancer?

AspectContractorFreelancer
CredentialsMay require licenses or certifications depending on industryOften self-certified; specific credentials vary by field
Work EnvironmentTypically works on-site or at client locations, often under a contractUsually works remotely or from home, with flexible locations
Employer & Industry UsageHired by companies for specific projects or time periodsHired by clients for individual tasks or projects, across various industries
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for project-based work, legal distinctionsCompared for flexible, independent work arrangements

In summary, Contractors are typically hired by companies for specific projects, often requiring industry-specific credentials and working on-site. Freelancers usually work independently, often remotely, offering services across multiple industries with flexible schedules. Both roles involve independent work but differ in work environment and contractual arrangements.

What kind of contractor makes the most money?

Specialty contractors such as electrical, plumbing, or HVAC contractors tend to earn higher incomes due to specialized skills and certifications. Commercial contractors working on large-scale projects often have higher earning potential compared to residential contractors. Experience, reputation, and the complexity of projects also significantly influence earnings in contracting roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contractor, you typically need expertise in construction methods, project management, budgeting, and relevant licensure or certifications. Familiarity with tools such as project management software, estimating programs, and compliance systems is often required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills help manage teams and client relationships effectively. These abilities are crucial to ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget while meeting client expectations and regulatory standards.

What do contractors do?

A contractor is a person who works on a construction site and is responsible for overseeing important details of a project. This could mean managing vendors, communicating information to all the workers on the site, reviewing documents and architectural plans to make sure the building is going according to plan, and managing the tasks of other workers. Contractors have extensive knowledge of the construction project that they are working on, regardless of its size and scale.

What is a contractor?

Contractors are professionals or companies hired to perform specific tasks, projects, or services for clients, typically on a temporary basis and under a contractual agreement. Unlike regular employees, contractors are usually self-employed or work through an agency, manage their own taxes, and often provide their own equipment or tools. They may work in various industries such as construction, IT, or consulting, and are generally paid per project or by the hour. Contractors have more flexibility in choosing their work and schedules but do not receive employee benefits like health insurance or paid leave.

How do contractors typically coordinate with clients and other professionals during a project?

Contractors often serve as the central point of communication between clients, subcontractors, architects, and suppliers throughout a project. They regularly hold meetings to discuss project progress, address challenges, and ensure that everyone is aligned with the project goals and timelines. Effective contractors use project management tools and clear communication channels to keep stakeholders informed and projects on track. This collaborative approach helps prevent misunderstandings and promotes a smooth workflow, which is essential for delivering successful outcomes.

Job description

Rosewood Financial Solutions is seeking experienced tax preparers to join our firm as independent contractors for the upcoming tax season.

This is a 1099 commission-based opportunity ideal for established preparers who already have their own client base and are looking for a professional platform, structure, and leadership support.

Contractor Responsibilities

  • Prepare and file federal and state individual tax returns (Form 1040)

  • Handle self-employed returns (Schedule C) and related credits

  • Conduct required due diligence and ensure full IRS compliance

  • Maintain accurate records and documentation

  • Manage and communicate with your own client base

  • Follow Rosewood Financial Solutions’ professional and compliance standard

Requirements

  • Minimum 6 months of paid tax preparation experience

  • Existing client base is welcomed

  • Strong knowledge of IRS regulations and due diligence requirements

  • Ability to confidently prepare self-employed and credit-heavy returns

  • Experience with tax software (CrossLink preferred but not required)

  • Must operate with integrity — no fraudulent returns tolerated

Compensation

This is a 1099 commission-based opportunity with tiered earning potential based on production.

Commission Structure:

  • 0–49 funded returns: 70% commission

  • 50–99 funded returns: 75% commission

  • 100+ funded returns: 80% commission

Commission percentage is based on total funded returns for the season.

This structure rewards productivity, consistency, and growth. The more you produce, the higher your earning potential.

Rosewood Financial Solutions provides the professional platform, tax software, EFIN structure, and operational support — you bring and manage your client base.

Unlimited earning potential for high producers.

Performance Bonuses

Rosewood Financial Solutions rewards productivity and professionalism.

Top Producer Bonus:
The preparer with the highest number of funded returns at the end of the season will receive a $2,000 performance bonus.

Milestone Bonus:

  • $500 bonus at 75 funded returns

  • Additional $1,000 bonus at 125 funded returns

Bonuses are paid at the end of the tax season and are contingent upon full compliance and no due diligence violations.

Our Structure & Support

At Rosewood Financial Solutions, we operate as a full support network for our contractors.

While you are your own boss and manage your own client relationships, you are not alone. We provide the professional platform, systems, and operational support to help you scale efficiently and confidently.

As a 1099 Independent Contractor, you have the freedom to:

  • Set your own schedule

  • Operate your business in a way that works best for you

  • Manage and communicate with your clients directly

  • Build and grow your own book of business

However, all contractors must:

  • Remain fully compliant with IRS regulations and due diligence requirements

  • Follow Rosewood Financial Solutions’ operational standards

  • Maintain accurate documentation

  • Move with integrity in every client interaction

We believe in independence with accountability.
You run your business — we provide the structure, protection, and support to help you grow it properly.
