Job description

The Technical Writer develops, edits, and maintains clear, accurate, and user-focused technical documentation supporting enterprise IT operations, ITSM delivery, and mission-critical systems within a federally regulated environment. This role collaborates closely with engineers, analysts, process and practice owners, service owners, the ITIL Specialist, and the Service and Integration Management Lead to translate complex technical, operational, and security-related information into accessible content.

The position supports the full documentation lifecycle, from information gathering and drafting through structured reviews, version control, publication, and maintenance. All documentation must align with organizational standards, governance requirements, and usability best practices to ensure that users-technical and non-technical-can effectively understand and operate Federal Client systems and services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate complex technical and security-relevant information from subject matter experts into clear, concise user guides, SOPs, workflows, and reference materials tailored to varied audiences.
  • Gather, analyze, and validate information by interviewing engineers, analysts, product owners, and ITSM leaders; reviewing specifications; and observing system workflows to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Apply structured writing principles, standardized templates, and style guides to create cohesive, findable, and reusable content across manuals, knowledge articles, training materials, and online help.
  • Use documentation and publishing tools to produce and maintain content in multiple formats, including web-based help, printable documentation, and training or presentation materials.
  • Apply plain-language principles, accessibility standards, and federal documentation guidelines to improve clarity, readability, and compliance.
  • Coordinate review cycles, track stakeholder comments, and maintain version control to ensure all documentation retains an auditable and governed change history.
  • Partner with agile and DevOps delivery teams to update documentation iteratively in alignment with frequent system releases, configuration updates, and service changes.
  • Support documentation needs for enterprise IT services-such as cloud platforms, cybersecurity capabilities, and ITSM workflows-essential to mission-critical Federal Client operations.
  • Collaborate closely with the ITIL Specialist and Service and Integration Management Lead to align documentation with ITIL-based service management practices and process governance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Writing, Communications, IT, or a related field, or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • 0-3 years of progressively responsible experience in technical writing, documentation, or closely related communication roles.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate complex technical information clearly and concisely for varied audiences.
  • Training or practical experience with documentation tools (for example, word processing, PDF, and help-authoring or publishing tools).
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with excellent attention to detail, organization, and version control.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with engineers, analysts, and cross-functional teams in a fast-paced IT environment.
  • Active or obtainable SECRET clearance and U.S. citizenship, with less than 10% travel required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in agile or DevOps environments and updating documentation in alignment with iterative release cycles.
  • Experience documenting enterprise IT services (cloud, cybersecurity, IT operations, or ITSM processes).
  • Knowledge of federal documentation standards, style guides, and regulatory requirements.
  • Exposure to information design, reusable content models, or component-based authoring frameworks.
  • Familiarity with ITSM concepts and ability to partner effectively with ITIL practitioners.
  • Exposure to using AI-assisted writing and content-generation tools in a manner consistent with federal AI policies, including security, data protection, human validation, transparency, and accuracy requirements.
  • Experience using AI-enabled transcription, summarization, or analysis tools to support documentation efforts while maintaining compliance with federal privacy and security controls.
  • Understanding of how AI-assisted tools integrate into knowledge management systems while adhering to federal metadata, retention, and auditability requirements.
