Director, Insurance and Enterprise Risk Management
TerraPower is seeking a highly talented and motivated candidate for the position of Director, Insurance and Enterprise Risk Management. Director, Insurance and Enterprise Risk Management will report to Associate General Counsel, Legal. TerraPower's Director, Insurance and Enterprise Risk Management, is responsible for proactively managing TerraPower's company insurance programs, managing and advising on project-specific insurance, and ensuring that TerraPower responsibly manages business risk through effective claims prevention and management.
Responsibilities
Insurance Program Management:
  • Manage TerraPower's corporate and project-specific lines of insurance, including corporate property and casualty, financial and professional liability, project-specific insurance placements (e.g., builder's risk; OCIP/CCIP), and other lines of coverage.
  • Partner with finance to manage TerraPower's surety program, including bonding capacity, surety relationships, collateral requirements, and indemnity obligations.
  • Function as a subject matter expert on US and international nuclear liability frameworks and nuclear insurance policies. Provide expert guidance on US nuclear licensing requirements, including but not limited to 10 CFR § 50.54(w), 10 CFR § 50.75, and 10 CFR § 140.11.
  • Manage insurance broker relationships and partner with TerraPower's insurance broker to develop placement strategies, negotiate coverage terms, manage claims, and issue certificates of insurance.
  • Work collaboratively with TerraPower engineering teams and environmental health, and safety (EHS) stakeholders to evaluate and implement loss control measures, with particular consideration for total cost of risk (TCOR).
  • Evaluate, develop, and/or implement alternative risk transfer programs and/or specialty insurance products as needed.
  • Provide continuous analysis of TerraPower risk appetite, risk bearing capacity, and risk sharing standards during insurance placements and renewals, referencing advanced risk analytics and loss modeling, when available.
  • Collaborate with legal, procurement, and contracts teams to negotiate vendor, customer, and other commercial contracts, including indemnity provisions, risk of loss provisions, TerraPower insurance requirements (e.g., policy coverage, limits, and exclusions), and counterparty insurance requirements. Work with contracts and procurement to ensure counterparty compliance with contractual insurance provisions.
  • Ensure TerraPower administers its lines of insurance in accordance with applicable policy terms, conditions, and claims reporting requirements. Review insurance binders, policies, and endorsements to ensure accuracy and inclusion of negotiated terms and conditions.

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM):
  • Manage the taxonomy and governance of the ERM program, including development of scalable processes to identify, assess, mitigate, report, and monitor risks to TerraPower's strategic goals and company objectives.
  • Oversee annual enterprise risk assessments, including interviews with technical and corporate leadership, to identify emerging risks, validate or recalibrate previously identified risks, and inform enterprise risk reporting and prioritization.
  • Develop and refine enterprise risk appetite and tolerances.
  • Provide executive reports on the ERM program to the ERMC Committee (ERMC) and Board Audit Committee.

General:
  • Coordinate and implement effective risk management and insurance program process improvements to reduce high-touch practices and streamline processes.
  • Develop and conduct training and education programs and materials to familiarize project teams with insurance and risk concepts, policies, processes, and best practices.
  • Work with other internal programs and departments, including but not limited to internal audit, EHS, quality assurance (QA), information technology (IT), finance to enable an integrated risk management program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications and Skills
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a business or risk-management-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10+ years of relevant insurance-related experience (general liability strongly preferred), with at least 3 years as a corporate risk manager (preferred).
  • Applicable experience in nuclear energy, nuclear pharmacy, construction or utilities sectors, or insurance brokerage required.

Knowledge
  • Expert knowledge of commercial insurance concepts.
  • Practical and experience-proven knowledge of enterprise risk management and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Knowledge of construction means and methods and industry-standard insurance policies and forms.
  • Knowledge of claims management with progressive experience managing complex claims.
  • Knowledge of contract provisions related to insurance.
  • Expertise in data analysis and reporting.
  • Understanding of the regulatory and administrative environment in which risk management issues are navigated.

Licenses/Certifications
  • Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) or similar certification preferred.

Job details
Salary Range: $184,368 - $245,824
* We typically place offers in the lower to middle portion of the range to maintain internal equity and allow room for growth. Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected individual's qualifications experience. This range is specific to Washington State.
