Title of Job: Seasonal Application Reader


POSITION SUMMARY:

Harvey Mudd College seeks a temporary full- or part-time application reader for its 2026-27 admission cycle. Harvey Mudd's admission process is a holistic one in which students' academic achievement, personal strengths, and potential to thrive in HMC's collaborative and challenging environment are considered. While previous admission reading experience is preferred, it is not required.


This is an hourly paid position from November-February with the possibility of extending through mid-March. Reader training will begin in November. Reading will not take place during the college's winter break (December 21-January 1). Some application processing tasks in Slate may be required at certain points throughout the cycle. While this is a fully remote position, candidates must reside in California.


The HMC Office of Admission uses the Committee-Based Evaluation process which requires that all application readers are available Monday-Friday from 8:30am-12:00pm and/or 1:30-5:00pm Pacific Standard Time.


Applications are read in pairs online, and therefore candidates will need access to a computer with high-speed internet access and must have a private and secure place in which to read.


Candidates will be asked to read quickly and thoroughly, process a large amount of information in a relatively short amount of time, be open to feedback from admission staff, be aware of their own personal biases, and keep HMC's mission and enrollment goals in mind. Candidates must also be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality, have strong written and oral skills, display strong judgment, and be able to manage their time well.


About Harvey Mudd College:

Located in the heart of Claremont, California, 35 miles east of Los Angeles, Harvey Mudd College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college offering degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. HMC enrolls about 900 students and is a member of The Claremont Colleges, which comprises five undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree is required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to write legibly, spell accurately and proofread documents.

  • Experience with Google suite and Slate

  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and other software (MS Word and Excel), and the ability to learn and apply new software.

  • Ability to safeguard, manage, and secure confidential information and records in accordance with policy and applicable laws.

  • Maintain confidential files. Research files and select relevant information from a variety of sources and documents.

  • Self-motivated and demonstrated record of taking initiative and working independently.

  • Requires use of independent judgment.

  • Ability to compose written correspondence and develop reports, agendas, and conference materials from rough drafts or dictation.

  • Ability to interact well within a diverse community.

  • Experience reading admission applications in a holistic admission process is preferred.

This position is classified as Category C as defined in the College's Remote Work Policy, without ad-hoc remote work flexibility. Upon approval by the Area Leadership Group and HR, this position may work up to 5 remote work day(s) per week during the academic year and up to 5 remote work day(s) during the non-academic year. Please note these days may vary depending on departmental and College needs. Additionally, remote work is subject to the College's remote work policy. The College reserves the right to revoke or modify a remote work arrangement for any staff, at any time and for any reason as articulated in the College's remote work policy.


Standard working hours for this position will generally be from 8:30am-12:00pm, Monday through Friday, though these hours may vary depending on departmental and College needs.


All remote work arrangements, including ad-hoc remote work, must be approved by the direct supervisor, area Cabinet member and Human Resources, and are subject to periodic review based on institutional needs. These arrangements are neither guaranteed nor considered entitlements and may change due to factors such as employee performance, evolving business needs, or changes to the position.
