Staff Product Designer

About Us

Toboggan Labs is a boutique consultancy building at the intersection of AI and healthcare. We solve challenging human problems by applying cutting-edge technology and domain understanding.

About the role

This is a staff-level position with significant client-facing and strategic responsibilities. In this role, you will be a senior design leader and strategist - blending product design, product strategy, and front-end prototyping expertise to help clients navigate complex product challenges in an AI-augmented world.

You will spend the majority of your time working directly with clients, whether as part of a team or independently. You will also contribute to evolving our design practice, mentoring other designers, and supporting business development.

Note that while we specialize in healthcare and regulated industries, not all our projects are in these fields, so you may work across different domains from time to time.
Your work will consist of:

  • Billable client work (~70-80% of the time)*, which might include:
    • Serving as a senior product strategist on complex B2B/enterprise engagements, driving product direction and design strategy.
    • Conducting discovery sessions - deriving product requirements and strategies for testing prototypes.
    • Rapidly building and iterating on prototypes using AI-powered tools.
    • Collaborating closely with engineers and domain specialists to ensure your AI-generated prototypes and front-end code meet acceptable design quality and accessibility standards.
    • Delivering product strategy artifacts - user flow diagrams, product ecomaps, interactive AI prototypes, wireframes, and strategic recommendations.
    • Presenting work and strategic recommendations to C-level stakeholders and domain experts.
    • Designing conversational AI-integrated experiences, innovative software tools, and data-heavy interfaces.
  • Practice contribution (~10-15%), including:
    • Developing and refining our design and strategy methodologies for AI-augmented product work.
    • Mentoring and collaborating with other designers, product managers, and front-end engineers.
    • Contributing to internal knowledge management, best practices documentation, and design systems.
  • Business development (~5%)*, including:
    • Participating in client discovery and scoping conversations.
    • Contributing to proposals and supporting sales cycles with your design expertise.
    • Building and maintaining client relationships.

About you

We are seeking an individual who represents a new AI-era blend of product designer, product strategist, and junior front-end developer. You understand that the most valuable UX work happens at the strategy level, and that most design artifacts can be created efficiently via automation, with the results assessed using your judgment and taste.

We want you to apply if you:

  • Have 7+ years of experience in product design, interaction design, product strategy, or a closely related field
  • Have deep expertise in designing complex B2B/enterprise workflows and systems
  • Are extremely comfortable designing with modern AI-augmented design and prototyping tools.
  • Have strong client-facing, interviewing, and presentation skills with the ability to lead meetings, influence stakeholders and push back when needed
  • Bring a blend of skills across strategy, UX design, human-computer interaction, and have some front-end engineering capabilities
  • Have exceptional English proficiency, both written and oral

Bonus points if you:

  • Have experience in healthcare, highly regulated industries, or other complex domain-specific environments
  • Are comfortable working with less visual AI environments such as Claude Code or Cursor
  • Have experience designing conversational AI experiences or AI interfaces
  • Have worked on B2B platforms with multiple user permission levels or data-heavy tools
  • Have a background in visual design or interaction design or another design field
  • Have Product Management skills
  • Are proficient with traditional design tools like Figma, alongside your AI prototyping tools

All of our job postings describe a bit of a unicorn. If you're kind of a "narwhal," please apply anyway. You don't need to meet all the requirements, let alone the bonus criteria. While experience and skill sets are valuable, growth potential and attitudes are equally important. We are usually flexible on levels or can advise you when a more relevant posting opens.

Toboggan Labs values the diversity of the people it hires and serves. Diversity, for us, means fostering a workplace in which a person's differences are recognized, appreciated, respected and responded to in ways that fully develop and utilize their talents and strengths.
