Job Description
Summary:
UT Health Tyler is seeking an experienced Orthopedic Medical Surgical Registered Nurse to join the 3 North A Orthopedic Unit. This 36-bed acute care unit specializes in Orthopedic Trauma and Total Joint Replacement patients while also caring for a variety of medical-surgical patients requiring orthopedic and post-operative care. The ideal candidate will have strong orthopedic nursing skills, experience caring for trauma patients, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced acute care environment.
Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to orthopedic, trauma, and medical-surgical patients.
- Assess, monitor, and manage patients following orthopedic trauma, fractures, and total joint replacement surgeries.
- Perform ongoing patient assessments and develop individualized nursing care plans.
- Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and pain management therapies, including PCA.
- Perform peripheral IV insertion, PICC line management, central line blood draws, and peripheral line care.
- Monitor patients for post-operative complications and changes in orthopedic or neurological status.
- Care for patients with spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and other orthopedic-related conditions.
- Provide wound care, surgical drain management, colostomy/ileostomy care, and feeding tube management as needed.
- Deliver respiratory care including oxygen therapy, HFNC, oral suctioning, and tracheostomy care.
- Participate in Rapid Response and Code Teams when necessary.
- Accurately document patient care using Epic EMR.
- Collaborate with physicians, therapists, case managers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure high-quality patient care.
- Minimum 2 years of recent acute care Medical Surgical RN experience.
- Orthopedic Trauma and Total Joint Replacement experience is required.
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred.
- Experience using Epic EMR is required.
- Ability to work 12-hour night shifts.
- Strong orthopedic assessment and post-operative patient management skills.
- Comfortable caring for trauma and orthopedic surgical patients.
Education:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; BSN preferred (if applicable per facility standards).
- Minimum 2 years of recent Medical Surgical RN experience in an acute care hospital.
- Recent Orthopedic Trauma and Total Joint Replacement experience required.
- Previous travel nursing experience preferred.
- Trauma Level I or Trauma Level II hospital experience preferred.
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Current AHA BLS certification required.
- ACLS preferred.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) preferred.

Ideal Candidate Profile
- Experienced Medical Surgical RN with a strong orthopedic background.
- Recent experience caring for orthopedic trauma and total joint replacement patients.
- Comfortable managing post-operative orthopedic cases, surgical drains, wound care, spinal injuries, and complex medical-surgical patients.
- Epic EMR proficiency and previous travel nursing experience are highly preferred.
- Experience in a Trauma Level I or II hospital is a strong advantage.
