DescriptionSummary:UT Health Tyler is seeking an experienced Medical Surgical Registered Nurse for the 3 South General Neuro Unit. This 19-bed unit provides care to adult and geriatric medical-surgical patients, including those with neurological and neurosurgical diagnoses. The unit is equipped with telemetry and continuous pulse oximetry monitoring, requiring nurses who are comfortable managing a diverse patient population in a fast-paced acute care setting.
Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric medical-surgical patients.
- Assess, monitor, and evaluate patients with medical, surgical, neurological, and neurosurgical conditions.
- Manage a patient assignment with an average 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio.
- Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and other prescribed treatments.
- Perform peripheral IV insertion, central line care, PICC line management, and port access as appropriate.
- Monitor telemetry, recognize changes in patient condition, and respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
- Utilize Rapid Response and Code Teams when indicated.
- Provide oxygen therapy, High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) management, and routine respiratory support.
- Perform wound care and maintain isolation precautions in accordance with hospital policies.
- Collaborate with physicians and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to develop and implement patient care plans.
- Accurately document patient care using Epic EMR.
Key Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years of recent Medical Surgical RN experience in an acute care hospital.
- Experience caring for neurological and neurosurgical patients preferred.
- Recent travel nursing experience preferred.
- Experience using Epic EMR is required.
- Comfortable managing a 1:6 patient ratio.
- Ability to work 12-hour night shifts.
- Strong telemetry monitoring and acute patient assessment skills.
QualificationsEducation:- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; BSN preferred (if applicable per facility standards).
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of recent Medical Surgical acute care experience.
- Travel nursing experience preferred.
- Experience working on General Medical Surgical and/or Neuro units preferred.
License:
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Current BLS (AHA) required.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required (preferred if not already obtained before start, depending on facility policy).

Ideal Candidate Profile
- 2+ years of recent acute care Med/Surg RN experience.
- Neuro or Neurosurgical patient experience strongly preferred.
- Recent Epic experience.
- Comfortable with telemetry, IV therapy, central lines, blood administration, and managing six-patient assignments on a busy night shift.
- Previous travel RN experience is a strong advantage.
