Job description

Bus Driver Core Responsibilities
  1. Safe Vehicle Operation: Operate a school bus by assessing traffic and road conditions, monitoring student behavior, and managing other factors necessary to safely deliver student passengers to and from school by adhering to state laws and school district policies. Drivers will be evaluated on driving and student management skills annually.
  2. Route and Passenger Management: Make stops only at authorized locations and transport only authorized passengers. Update routes and maps, adjust timetables as necessary, and communicate all route changes and road hazards to district leadership.
  3. Pre-Trip Inspections: Perform bus safety pre-trip inspections as required by law to ensure proper vehicle working condition. Maintain all onboard safety equipment. Drivers will be evaluated on pre-trip inspections annually.
  4. Post-Trip Inspections & Reporting: Perform post-trip inspections to check for vandalism, lost articles, or sleeping students. Document and communicate all mechanical defects and maintenance needs promptly.
  5. Student Safety & Emergency Protocols: Organize and perform mandated bus evacuation drills. Report all red-light violations to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Ensure the safety of all students entering and exiting the bus by stopping traffic in accordance with state law.
  6. Student Conduct Communication: Monitor student behavior and provide written reports for all incidents of misconduct to the building administration. Communicate student conduct expectations and route information to parents and school staff as necessary.
  7. Bus Cleanliness: Maintain a safe and sanitary bus environment for students by sweeping and dusting the interior daily. Ensure that the exterior of the bus is washed at least twice monthly and that all emergency lights are kept free of dirt, mud, and snow.
  8. Daily Record Keeping: Perform daily record-keeping activities, including the accurate completion of pre-trip inspection forms, mileage logs, route surveys, and updated route maps.
  9. Credential Maintenance: Maintain a clean driving record and a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with all appropriate state endorsements. Immediately report any traffic violations or changes in medical certification status to the district.
Supervisory & Operational Responsibilities
  1. State Compliance & Documentation: Ensure that all state-required transportation paperwork, logs, and compliance reports are completed accurately and submitted to the appropriate agencies in a timely manner.
  2. Fleet Maintenance Coordination: Oversee the mechanical readiness of the entire fleet. Ensure all buses are properly maintained and scheduled with the district's contract mechanic so that routine, preventative, and emergency maintenance is kept up to date.
  3. Driver Training & Onboarding: Manage the onboarding pipeline by ensuring that all new bus drivers are properly trained, road-ready, and fully compliant with all state-mandated requirements, background checks, and licensing codes.
  4. Scheduling & Route Logistics: Coordinate daily driver schedules, establish efficient district-wide bus routes, manage driver call-outs, and secure substitute drivers to ensure seamless morning and afternoon coverage.
  5. Special Event Transportation: Oversee and assign transportation logistics for all district field trips, athletic events, and extracurricular activities, ensuring proper driver staffing and vehicle availability.
  6. Community Liaison: Serve as the primary point of contact for parents, community members, and school administrators regarding transportation questions, route delays, scheduling adjustments, or student behavior escalations.
  7. Emergency Incident Management: Act as the primary coordinator in the event of transportation emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, or severe weather conditions, interfacing with emergency services, mechanics, and district administration to ensure student safety.
  8. General Directives: Perform other tasks and administrative duties as apparent or assigned by the Superintendent or school board.
