What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Contract Machine Shop, and why are they important?

Success in a Contract Machine Shop requires expertise in machining techniques, blueprint reading, and a solid understanding of materials and manufacturing processes, often proven by technical training or an apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC machines, CAD/CAM software, and quality control systems is commonly expected. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for this setting. These abilities ensure precision, efficiency, and the reliable delivery of high-quality components to meet client specifications.

What are some common challenges faced in a Contract Machine Shop environment, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Working in a Contract Machine Shop often involves handling diverse projects with varying specifications and tight deadlines. New hires may find it challenging to quickly adapt to different client requirements and prioritize multiple tasks efficiently. To succeed, it's important to develop strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret technical drawings accurately. Familiarity with a range of machinery and safety protocols is also crucial. Being proactive about ongoing learning and asking experienced colleagues for guidance can help ease the transition.

What is a contract machine shop?

A contract machine shop is a manufacturing facility that provides machining services to other companies on a contractual basis. Instead of producing their own products, these shops use specialized equipment and skilled machinists to create parts and components according to client specifications. Businesses often outsource work to contract machine shops for cost savings, access to advanced technology, and to meet production deadlines. Services can include CNC machining, milling, turning, fabrication, and assembly. This arrangement allows companies to focus on their core competencies while leveraging the expertise of the machine shop.

Job description

CNC Machinist!

Job Description

This role offers the opportunity to work as a certified CNC Machinist within a manufacturing environment that produces gauges, pressure transducers, and related products. You will primarily support first-shift operations in the shipping and receiving area by performing precision CNC machining and contributing to logistics-related activities. The position requires strong technical ability with CNC mills and lathes, comfort working with tight tolerances, and the ability to read and interpret blueprints.

Responsibilities

  • Operate CNC mills and lathes to produce precision components used in gauges, pressure transducers, and related products.
  • Set up CNC machines, verify proper tooling, and ensure programs run correctly for each job.
  • Work with tight tolerances down to 0.0001 inches, ensuring parts meet exact specifications and quality standards.
  • Interpret and work from blueprints and technical drawings to determine machining requirements.
  • Use G and M code to run and adjust CNC programs as needed to achieve optimal performance and accuracy.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and adjustments on CNC equipment to maintain consistent production quality.
  • Collaborate with team members in shipping and receiving to support logistics activities, including determining the best method (ground, air, freight) to ship products based on size and weight.
  • Use computer systems to process shipping and receiving transactions, including entering data, tracking shipments, and verifying incoming materials.
  • Run received items through the computer system to document and confirm deliveries, focusing on administrative rather than physical handling tasks.
  • Follow established safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area in the machine shop and warehouse.
  • Communicate effectively with planners, inventory staff, and shipping/receiving teammates to coordinate workflow and resolve issues.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by suggesting process enhancements and supporting new business growth.

Essential Skills

  • Certified CNC Machinist with a strong background in CNC machining.
  • Hands-on experience operating CNC mills and lathes in a manufacturing or machine shop environment.
  • Ability to work with tight tolerances down to 0.0001 inches while maintaining high quality and consistency.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with G and M code for CNC programming and operation.
  • Experience with machining operations, including setup and operation of mills and lathes.
  • Comfort working in a machine shop environment with both CNC and manual machining processes.
  • Ability to use computers to support shipping, receiving, and logistics-related tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with planners, inventory staff, and shipping/receiving colleagues.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with SolidWorks or other design software is a strong plus.
  • Exposure to or experience with Mazak equipment and related CNC controls.
  • background in programming and machine setup in a CNC environment.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing company producing precision mechanical components.
  • Comfort working across both machining and logistics functions, including basic knowledge of ground, air, and freight shipping options.

Why Work Here?

You will join a growing manufacturing organization that is actively gaining new business and offers a long-term, stable opportunity. The company provides solid benefits, immediate retirement plan matching, and a generous paid time off policy of 19 days (excluding holidays), supporting a healthy work-life balance. You will work in a clean, professional environment with a supportive team culture that values collaboration and continuous improvement.

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing facility with approximately 92 employees and a clean, well-maintained work environment. You will work primarily on the first shift, typically from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with some potential schedule flexibility. The setting includes a machine shop with CNC mills and lathes, as well as a warehouse and shipping/receiving area staffed by planners, inventory personnel, and shipping/receiving team members. Work involves operating CNC equipment, using computers for logistics and documentation, and collaborating closely with a small, coordinated warehouse team.
