What is a contract IT systems administrator?

Contract IT Systems Administrators are professionals who manage and maintain an organization's computer systems, networks, and servers on a temporary or project-based basis. They are typically hired for specific projects, to cover staff shortages, or to provide specialized expertise. Their responsibilities include installing and configuring hardware and software, monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring data security. Unlike permanent employees, contract systems administrators work for a set period or until the completion of a project. This role is common in companies needing flexibility or specialized skills for short-term needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract IT systems administrator?

To thrive as a Contract IT Systems Administrator, you need a solid understanding of network infrastructure, server management, cybersecurity, and typically a degree in computer science or relevant certifications like CompTIA, Microsoft, or Cisco. Familiarity with tools such as Windows and Linux server environments, virtualization platforms, and ticketing systems is common. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for addressing client needs and collaborating with diverse teams. These competencies ensure reliable IT operations, minimize downtime, and deliver responsive support in dynamic contract-based environments.

What are some typical challenges a contract IT systems administrator might face when joining a new organization?

As a Contract IT Systems Administrator, you may encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to unfamiliar IT environments and understanding existing infrastructure. Since contract roles often require immediate impact, you'll need to efficiently assess system configurations, security protocols, and documentation standards. Building rapport with permanent team members and learning company-specific processes can also be demanding within limited time frames. However, these challenges offer valuable opportunities to sharpen your problem-solving skills and adaptability.

Position Title: IT Systems Administrator

Department: Information Technology

Location: Fenton, MO

Reports To: IT Director

Classification: Salary -Exempt

Position Summary:

Control Devices is seeking an experienced Systems Administrator to own and maintain the company's core IT infrastructure across multiple U.S. locations. Working alongside an IT Systems Specialist and senior IT Director, this role is responsible for the reliability, security, and performance of servers, virtualization, network, and cloud infrastructure. The ideal candidate is a self-directed infrastructure professional who can operate independently, mentor junior staff, and serve as the primary escalation point for platform-level issues.

Key Responsibilities:

Server & Virtualization Infrastructure

  • Administer and maintain Windows Server environments: Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, GPO, file/print services, and certificate services
  • Manage VMware vSphere virtualization platform including host maintenance, VM lifecycle, snapshots, and capacity planning
  • Maintain on-premises and hybrid infrastructure supporting Microsoft 365 / Entra ID (Hybrid Join, Entra Cloud Sync, SSCP)

Cloud & Identity Administration

  • Serve as platform-level owner for Microsoft 365 and Entra ID: tenant administration, conditional access, MFA policies, licensing, and group management
  • Administer Exchange Online, Teams, and SharePoint at the platform/governance level
  • Own MDM platform administration (Microsoft Intune): compliance policies, configuration profiles, app deployment, and enrollment workflows

Network & Security Infrastructure

  • Maintain and administer network infrastructure including Cisco firewall rules, VLANs, VPN, and inter-site connectivity
  • Lead endpoint security operations: antivirus policy management, patching, and vulnerability remediation
  • Administer email security platforms (e.g., Avanan/Check Point) and support security audits and access reviews
  • Own backup infrastructure and disaster recovery procedures including verification and documentation

SQL Server & Data Infrastructure

  • Administer SQL Server instances across the environment: maintenance plans, backup/restore, SQL Agent jobs, availability, and patching
  • Coordinate with application and reporting teams on database performance, linked server configurations, and instance migrations
  • Support SSRS infrastructure and reporting services availability

Mentorship & Escalation

  • Serve as Tier 3 escalation for issues beyond the IT Systems Specialist's scope
  • Provide guidance and knowledge transfer to help desk and junior IT staff
  • Maintain infrastructure documentation

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field required.

Experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on systems administration in a Windows Server / Active Directory environment
  • VMware vSphere or equivalent virtualization platform administration
  • Microsoft 365 and Entra ID platform administration (beyond end-user support)
  • Intune/MDM platform management experience
  • SQL Server administration (backups, agent jobs, maintenance, patching)
  • Network infrastructure fundamentals: firewall administration, VLANs, VPN, DNS/DHCP
  • Scripting proficiency in PowerShell for automation and administration tasks
  • Experience supporting manufacturing or industrial environments a plus

Technical Skills

  • Windows Server (2016/2019/2022): Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy, DFS, certificate services, and server role administration
  • VMware vSphere: ESXi host administration, vCenter, VM lifecycle management, snapshots, and resource optimization
  • Microsoft 365 & Entra ID: Tenant-level administration, Entra Cloud Sync / AD Connect, conditional access policies, MFA/SSPR, hybrid identity, and license management
  • Microsoft Intune: Compliance and configuration policies, app deployment, Autopilot enrollment, and device lifecycle management
  • SQL Server (2016+): Instance administration, backup/restore, SQL Agent job management, maintenance plans, linked servers, and basic performance monitoring
  • Network infrastructure: Firewall rule management (Cisco Meraki or equivalent), VLANs, inter-VLAN routing, site-to-site and remote access VPN, DNS/DHCP
  • Email & endpoint security: Email security gateway administration (Avanan/Check Point or equivalent), antivirus/EDR policy management, MFA enforcement
  • PowerShell: Scripting for administration automation, bulk user/group management, reporting, and task scheduling
  • Backup & DR: Enterprise backup platform administration, recovery testing, and documented runbook maintenance
  • Exchange Online: Advanced mail flow, connectors, hybrid configuration, and transport rules
  • IIS / Windows web services: Site administration, SSL certificate management, application pool configuration
  • SSRS / SQL Server Reporting Services: Service administration and report deployment (report development handled by others)
  • SharePoint Online: Site administration and governance (not end-user content management)

Soft Skills & Other Requirements

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with evolving technologies.
