The Residential Helper position is a very physically demanding job. Helpers assist drivers with providing safe, courteous, and complete waste removal for customers.
Responsibilities of Position:
  • Provide waste or recycling removal services to customers on assigned route(s) by emptying trash/recycling receptacles (weighing up to 75 pounds each from the ground approximately 300-500 times per day) into truck in a safe and compliant manner
  • Enter and exit the truck multiple times per day and/or ride on the back step of a truck to service 600-1000 stops per day
  • Replace trash/recycling receptacles neatly at the curb or designated area
  • Clean up waste spills and overflows
  • Work with multiple drivers depending on workloads
  • Operate packing mechanism and various lever/handles on truck to activate lifting/loading mechanism
  • Assist Driver in safely backing up the truck by directing the Driver from outside the truck
  • Assist in unloading or cleaning truck as needed
  • Professionally interact with internal and external customers
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility:
  • This position will not manage employees

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:
  • Ability to learn and understand truck mechanics
  • Good written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively and professionally with internal and external customers
  • Additional skills may be required to perform additional task(s) specific to work location, department or line of business.
  • Must be able to communicate in the English language well enough to understand, and respond to questions, directions, traffic signs, signals, and safety training

Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:
  • Waste industry experience preferred

Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:
  • Frequently lifting/carrying a max of 75 lbs
  • Continuously pushing/pulling a max of 75 lbs
  • Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 100 lbs
  • Continuously working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
  • Continuously working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
  • Frequently stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
  • Frequently climbing and/or balancing
  • Frequently sitting/standing/walking

Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:
  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver's license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
