What is a contract graphic textile designer?

Contract Graphic Textile Designers are creative professionals who design patterns, prints, and graphics specifically for textiles, such as fabrics used in fashion, home decor, or industrial applications. They typically work on a freelance or contract basis rather than as permanent staff for a single employer. These designers collaborate with clients to develop original textile designs that align with brand aesthetics, production requirements, and current market trends. Their work often involves using both hand-drawing techniques and digital design tools to create repeatable patterns and artwork suitable for various textile products.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract graphic textile designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Graphic Textile Designer, you need strong skills in textile design, color theory, and pattern creation, often supported by a degree in textile or graphic design. Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and familiarity with digital printing or fabric production processes, are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with clients and translate concepts into market-ready designs. These skills ensure the delivery of innovative and commercially viable textile products that meet client specifications and industry standards.

How does a contract graphic textile designer typically collaborate with clients and production teams during a project?

As a Contract Graphic Textile Designer, you will often work closely with clients to understand their brand vision, target market, and specific design requirements. Collaboration with production teams is also essential to ensure your digital or hand-drawn designs translate well onto fabrics and meet technical specifications. Effective communication and responsiveness are key, as you may need to provide design revisions, prepare files for print, and address feedback quickly to keep projects on schedule. This role requires balancing creative independence with adaptability to client and team input throughout the design process.

Objective
Composely is seeking a contract graphic designer to support a portfolio of marketing and brand initiatives, producing high-quality visual assets across digital and print channels. This role is intended to provide consistent, on-brand design support across social, web, email, and print, reducing turnaround time and easing capacity constraints on the internal creative team. This position will initially serve as a pilot engagement, with the potential to expand into an ongoing contractor relationship depending on performance and business needs.
Profile Overview
We are looking for a versatile, detail-oriented designer with strong visual judgment, the ability to work fluidly across multiple design tools, and comfort managing a varied workload with minimal oversight. The ideal candidate will:
  • Have experience designing social graphics, website landing pages, PDF and print design, and email design
  • Be comfortable working across Adobe, Canva, and Figma depending on the project
  • Understand brand guidelines and maintain visual consistency across deliverables
  • Provide proactive feedback on briefs, templates, and design processes
  • Potentially assist with overflow design requests during high-volume periods

Scope
  • Contract role
  • Estimated commitment: approximately 10-15 hours/month depending on workflow needs
  • Pilot engagement beginning in September with potential for ongoing work
  • Flexible workload based on contractor capacity and evolving business needs

Responsibilities
  • Design graphics for social media (static posts, carousels, reels, ads) aligned with brand and platform best practices
  • Design and lay out website landing pages and digital campaign assets in collaboration with marketing and web teams
  • Create and format digital PDFs, including one-pagers, sales collateral, guides, etc.
  • Design print graphics such as flyers, signage, brochures, and event materials, with attention to print-ready specs (bleed, CMYK, resolution)
  • Build email designs/templates that are visually engaging and render well across email clients
  • Maintain and apply brand guidelines consistently across all deliverables
  • Collaborate with internal marketing and stakeholders through Slack and internal meetings
  • Participate in occasional internal discussions regarding brand and design standards

Skills & Qualifications
  • Proven portfolio demonstrating range across social, digital, print, and email design
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign; XD or Premiere a plus)
  • Proficiency in Canva for fast-turnaround and templated content
  • Working proficiency in Figma for web/landing page design and collaborative design workflows
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, color theory, and visual hierarchy
  • Experience preparing print-ready files (bleed, trim, CMYK vs. RGB, resolution requirements)
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with distributed teams
  • Strong attention to detail and deadline management
  • Experience using Slack and collaborative project management systems preferred
