What is a contract front end developer?

A Contract Front End Developer is a temporary or freelance professional responsible for building and optimizing a website or web application's user interface. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, along with frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js. Unlike full-time employees, contract developers work for a set duration or project basis, often collaborating with multiple clients. This role requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to design details, and the ability to adapt to different workflows. Contract developers may work remotely or on-site, depending on the employer's needs.

What does a contract front end developer do?

Contract Front End Developers usually spend their days building and optimizing user interfaces, turning design mockups into interactive web pages using modern frameworks and tools. They often collaborate closely with UX/UI designers, backend developers, and project managers to ensure seamless integration and functionality. Day-to-day tasks may include coding, testing, debugging, participating in stand-up meetings, and reviewing pull requests. Because they're contractors, they also need to manage their own schedules and communicate progress clearly to ensure project milestones are met.

To thrive as a Contract Front End Developer, you need strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and responsive design, often supported by a relevant degree or proven work experience. Familiarity with frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue.js, as well as version control systems like Git, is commonly expected, and certifications like Certified Front End Developer can help. Excellent communication, adaptability, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and meet project deadlines in a contract-based setting. These competencies ensure you can deliver high-quality, user-centric web experiences efficiently, often while balancing multiple projects or working remotely.

Job description

Senior Full Stack Engineer - Product Experience

The focus of our Product Experience team is the interface between the product and the user.ย We own the central reposition which in turn owns the most important database in our architecture.

As a Senior Full Stack Engineer on the Product Experience team, you are responsible for the delivery, quality, and end-to-end user experience of features across Fixify's product, from backend messaging pipelines through to the UI. You are accountable to the Engineering Manager, Product Experience for shipping features that are performant, reliable, and polished in the hands of users.

You are responsible for owning feature delivery across the full stack. Your deliverables are the horizontally scalable messaging pipelines, application services, and UI components that make up Fixify's product, built to a standard where the next engineer can extend them without friction.

You ensure that Fixify's users have product experiences that are reliable and refined. You validate your work against real user environments and incorporate their feedback before a feature is considered complete.

You partner with Product Management, Design, and other engineers to translate user needs into technical solutions, ensuring features are scoped, built, and refined against how customers actually use the product.

If you like owning a feature all the way to the user and leaving the codebase better than you found it, we'd like to hear from you!

Technical Skills

  • Expert-level knowledge of React and modern front-end application architecture: You can build component, state, and data-flow patterns that hold up across a large product surface.
  • Expert-level knowledge of the pillar's core languages and technologies (TypeScript, Node.js, JSX, HTML, CSS): You can write idiomatic, maintainable code across the stack and conduct meaningful code reviews.
  • Working knowledge of software design and architecture: You can evaluate trade-offs within a component, design software that remains maintainable under change, and articulate your decisions clearly to your team.
  • Working knowledge of Remix / React Router with server-side rendering: You can implement data loading, routing, and SSR that balances performance, complexity, and maintainability.
  • Working knowledge of front-end state management and data-fetching patterns: You can select and apply appropriate approaches for client and server state within the patterns the pillar defines.
  • Working knowledge of design system construction and component documentation (Storybook): You can build and document components that fit the design system's contracts and theming standards.
  • Working knowledge of API design and service integration patterns: You can implement interface contracts, recognize coupling risks, and follow the integration patterns established across the platform.
  • Working knowledge of authentication and authorization patterns and protocols: You can implement and review auth code for security, correctness, and operability.
  • Working knowledge of databases and data modelling, both relational (Postgres specifically) and NoSQL: You can model data for performance, write sound schema changes, and recognize query patterns that will not hold under production load.
  • Working knowledge of automated testing strategies: You can write meaningful tests at the appropriate layer and review tests for real coverage rather than metric compliance.
  • Working knowledge of observability and production readiness: You can add the logging, tracing, and alerting appropriate to the software you build, and verify it meets production requirements.
  • Familiarity with Python: You can read and make contained contributions to Python code where the pillar's work touches it.
  • Familiarity with AWS and cloud-native development: You can work day-to-day in the operational context the application runs in and collaborate with infrastructure-focused engineers on deployment and scaling.

Non-Technical Skills

  • Ability to contribute to technical design discussions and reach clear, documented decisions with your team.
  • Ability to write technical documentation that other engineers, designers, and product partners can build against.
  • Ability to communicate technical trade-offs and risks clearly to your manager and immediate stakeholders.
  • Ability to give direct, constructive feedback in code reviews and design discussions that improves the work without discouraging the engineer.
  • Ability to trace problems within your area of ownership to root cause rather than symptoms, and to drive fixes to completion.
  • Ability to break well-scoped or moderately ambiguous work into deliverable increments with visible dependencies and risks.
  • Ability to model the engineering culture Fixify is building: disciplined, collaborative, and oriented toward long-term quality over short-term output.

Perks & benefits

  • Flexible work environment: 100% remote with flexible core working hours
  • Time to recharge: Unlimited PTO plus 12 paid federal holidays
  • Connectivity stipend: $150 monthly to support cell phone, internet, or equipment expenses
  • Retirement: Participation in our 401(k) program
  • Equity: Option grants to purchase shares through Fixify's equity program
  • Health insurance: Medical, dental, and vision coverage with 100% of your deductible covered by Fixify
  • Parental leave: Paid parental leave for birth, adoption, or surrogacy
