Contract Engineering Manager information

What is a contract engineering manager?

A Contract Engineering Manager is a professional hired on a temporary or project-specific basis to oversee engineering teams and manage technical projects. Unlike permanent managers, contract engineering managers typically work for a set duration or until the completion of a particular project. Their responsibilities include coordinating engineering efforts, ensuring project deadlines are met, managing budgets, and facilitating communication between team members and stakeholders. Companies may hire contract engineering managers to provide specialized expertise or to fill temporary leadership gaps. This role requires strong technical knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to adapt quickly to different work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract engineering manager?

To thrive as a Contract Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and team leadership, usually backed by a relevant degree and significant industry experience. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), engineering software, and often certifications such as PMP or Agile methodologies are highly valued. Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help you manage diverse teams and client relationships effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to client specifications in a dynamic contract-based environment.

What are some common challenges faced by a contract engineering manager, and how can they be addressed?

As a Contract Engineering Manager, one common challenge is integrating quickly with existing teams and understanding project context within a limited timeframe. Since contract roles often involve leading established engineering teams on short notice, building trust and aligning on goals efficiently is crucial. Effective communication, setting clear expectations, and leveraging strong project management skills help ensure smooth collaboration. Proactively identifying knowledge gaps and seeking input from team members can also accelerate onboarding and project delivery.

What is the difference between Contract Engineering Manager vs Project Engineer?

The Contract Engineering Manager typically oversees multiple projects, manages contractual aspects, and liaises with clients, requiring leadership and contractual knowledge. The Project Engineer focuses on executing specific engineering tasks within a project, emphasizing technical skills and project coordination. While both roles require engineering credentials, the Contract Engineering Manager has a broader managerial and contractual scope compared to the more technical and project-specific Project Engineer.

Join us in shaping the future of healthcare.

Job Summary

Our engineering organization has tripled in size over a short period, and we are seeking an Engineering Manager to provide the close, day-to-day leadership our engineers need as we scale. This role directly manages a team within one of our core areas — application scaling and delivery, new product development powered by cutting-edge AI and LLM methodologies, or our core platform — reporting into a Director of Engineering.

The Manager will be hands‑on with both people and technical work: running performance and growth conversations for their direct reports while staying close enough to the day‑to‑day engineering to review designs, unblock the team, and weigh in on key decisions. This role executes against the roadmap set by their Director, translating priorities into clear plans for their team.

We are looking for a people leader with direct, hands‑on management experience — someone who has grown and led a small engineering team and is ready to keep building on that foundation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directly manage a team of engineers, typically 5–6 direct reports, with full ownership of day‑to‑day people leadership

  • Conduct performance reviews, resolve conflict, and support career progression and growth for each member of your team

  • Partner with your Director of Engineering to translate roadmap priorities into clear, executable plans for your team

  • Stay hands‑on with the technical work as needed — reviewing designs, unblocking engineers, and weighing in on key technical decisions

  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new engineers as the team continues to grow

  • Foster a strong team culture and clear channels for feedback, especially as the broader organization scales

  • Support modernization of the platform to keep pace with the scaling application layer

  • Apply modern LLM methodologies and applied AI techniques to help solve some of the hardest, highest‑impact problems in healthcare

  • Support new product initiatives from concept through production deployment

  • Help drive process and delivery rigor as the applications org matures

Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of engineering experience, including 2+ years of direct experience as a people manager

  • Track record of growing or leading a small engineering team, ideally from a handful of engineers toward 5–10 people

  • Demonstrated people management fundamentals: performance management, conflict resolution, and career development

  • Strong technical foundation with the ability to engage credibly in system design and architecture discussions

  • Prior technical lead engineering experience in backend distributed systems, building out microservices, rest APIs, and AI/ML.

  • Experience shipping and supporting applications in production

  • Comfort operating in a fast‑growing, fast‑changing engineering organization

Desirable Skills
  • Experience at both a large technology company and a growth‑stage startup

  • Applied AI/ML or LLM experience, particularly for teams focused on new product development

  • Prior experience in platform, foundational, or distributed systems engineering

  • Experience in a healthcare‑related business (not required, but a plus)

  • Familiarity with value‑based or outcomes‑based contract environments
