What are typical challenges faced in a contract embedded software role?

Contract embedded software professionals often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to new hardware platforms, integrating with legacy systems, and rapidly understanding diverse project requirements. Since contracts are often project-based, there may be limited time for onboarding, requiring strong self-motivation and efficient troubleshooting skills. Additionally, clear documentation and collaboration with hardware engineers or cross-functional teams are critical to ensure smooth system integration. These challenges can be rewarding, as they provide opportunities to develop broad technical expertise and experience a wide variety of products and industries.

What is a Contract Embedded Software job?

A Contract Embedded Software job involves developing, testing, and maintaining embedded systems software for a company on a temporary or project basis. Contractors typically work with microcontrollers, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and low-level programming languages like C or C++. These roles can vary in duration and may involve working remotely or onsite. Contract engineers often collaborate with hardware teams, follow specific project requirements, and ensure system reliability and performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract Embedded Software position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract Embedded Software professional, you need strong experience with programming languages like C or C++, real-time operating systems (RTOS), hardware interfacing, and a relevant degree in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with development tools such as JTAG debuggers, oscilloscopes, version control systems, and certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) are highly valued. Effective problem-solving, adaptability, and clear communication are important soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and managing project-based work. These capabilities ensure you can deliver robust, efficient solutions within project timelines in dynamic, technology-driven environments.

Job description

Job Title: Software Engineer – Embedded Systems and Networking
Job Description

This role focuses on designing and implementing embedded software solutions for complex, multi-network communication systems used in large-scale naval programs. You will develop modern C++ and embedded Linux software, contribute to system architecture, and collaborate closely with systems and hardware engineering teams to deliver reliable, near real-time communication and simulation capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop embedded software solutions for complex communication systems operating in multi-network environments.
  • Contribute to the definition and refinement of software architecture for embedded and real-time applications.
  • Develop software that integrates with embedded Linux and real-time operating systems (RTOS), including device drivers and board support packages (BSP).
  • Implement and maintain networking features using TCP/IP, SIP, RTP, and VOIP protocols to support real-time communications.
  • Build and integrate REST APIs to enable interoperability and control of embedded systems.
  • Conduct independent research to identify, evaluate, and propose new technical solutions to challenging engineering problems.
  • Collaborate closely with systems and hardware engineering teams to resolve technical issues and ensure seamless integration across hardware and software components.
  • Debug and troubleshoot embedded software issues in near real-time simulation environments, including low-level and protocol-level problems.
  • Prepare and deliver clear presentations and demonstrations of software capabilities, designs, and solutions to internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Document software designs, interfaces, and implementation details to support maintainability and future enhancements.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum 7 years of experience developing software in modern C++ (e.g., C++11, C++14, C++17) for embedded systems.
  • Minimum 7 years of experience with embedded Linux and real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Hands-on experience developing and integrating device drivers and board support packages (BSP) for embedded platforms.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience with networking protocols, including VOIP, TCP/IP, SIP, and RTP.
  • Experience designing and implementing REST APIs in embedded or networked environments.
  • Proficiency in debugging embedded software, including low-level and near real-time simulation scenarios.
  • Ability to design software for complex, multi-network environments and distributed communication systems.
  • Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with systems and hardware engineering teams.
  • Ability to conduct independent technical research and translate findings into practical solutions.
  • Strong communication skills to prepare and deliver technical presentations and demonstrations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with Asterisk PBX systems.
  • Familiarity with PJSIP C/C++ libraries for SIP-based communications.
  • Experience working with TightVNC or similar remote desktop/remote control technologies.
  • Exposure to software-defined radio (SDR) technologies and applications.
  • Knowledge of ED137 interoperability standards.
  • Experience working on defense, naval, or other mission-critical communication systems is an asset.
  • Comfort working in environments that require high reliability, security, and interoperability across multiple networks.
Work Environment

This position is primarily on site, with an expectation of working in the office 4–5 days per week. You will operate in a highly collaborative engineering environment alongside systems and hardware teams, working with embedded Linux platforms, real-time operating systems, networking equipment, and near real-time simulation tools. The role supports advanced communication systems for major naval programs, offering exposure to modern embedded technologies, complex networking stacks, and mission-critical applications in a structured, professional setting.
