Job Description: Business Manager (12-Month, Full-Time)

Position Title:

Classification:

Full-Time, 12-Month Administrative Position

Reports To:

Superintendent of Schools

Position Summary:

The Business Manager is a district-level administrative leader responsible for the oversight and management of Business Services. This position provides strategic leadership for the district's financial and operational functions and serves as a key advisor to the Superintendent on fiscal planning, resource allocation, and operational efficiency.

The Business Manager ensures effective administration of district business operations and works collaboratively with district staff, school administrators, external partners, agencies, vendors such as food service and transportation, as well as other stakeholders to support the overall mission of the school district.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, implementation, and long-range planning of the district budget
  • Develop budget guidelines, coordinate the annual budget process, and support administrators in budget preparation and review
  • Prepare, analyze, and present financial reports to support Superintendent and Board of Education decision-making
  • Monitor and manage state and federal grant-funded programs to ensure compliance with applicable requirements
  • Oversee financial systems, recordkeeping, and internal controls to ensure compliance with audit, legal, and regulatory standards
  • Supervise Business Office operations, including oversight of the district accountant and related financial functions
  • Administer and oversee the district transportation program in accordance with Board of Education requirements
  • Oversee employee benefits administration, including coordination of medical, dental, life, and related insurance programs in accordance with applicable contracts and district policy
  • Administer district facilities operations, including maintenance, security, property protection, and community use of school facilities
  • Oversee school nutrition services in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Serve as advisor to the Superintendent regarding all financial and operational matters
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schoolsย 

Qualifications:

  • Administrative certification (085 -School Business Administrator) or (092) certification from the Connecticut State Department of Education, or eligibility to obtain certification
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required; Master's degree or CPA preferred
  • Experience as a School Business Manager, Director of Finance and Operations, or equivalent leadership role preferred
  • Experience with school financial systems (Infinite Visions preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of fund accounting, budgeting, and financial management in a public sector environment
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across a broad range of district roles and responsibilities
  • Experience working with external partners, agencies, and service providers
  • Knowledge of human resource and benefits administration principles preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership, management, and decision-making skillsย 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, and work at a computer for extended periods
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and electronically
  • Ability to travel between district buildings as needed
  • Occasional attendance at evening meetings, including Board of Education meetingsย 

FLSA Status and Compensation:

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt administrative position in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The annual salary range is $110,000 $120,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications, and in accordance with Board of Education policy and/or applicable collective bargaining agreements, as applicable. This position includes a comprehensive benefits package.

Work Schedule:

Full-time, 12-month position
This position may require evening meetings and extended hours during budget development, audit cycles, and other time-sensitive district deadlines.
