Contract Backend Developer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Backend Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Backend Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or Node.js, along with experience in database management and API development, supported by a relevant degree or proven project experience. Familiarity with frameworks (such as Django, Spring, or Express), cloud services (like AWS or Azure), and version control systems (e.g., Git) is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication, and the ability to quickly adapt to new codebases and team environments set top contractors apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering reliable, scalable backend solutions and integrating smoothly into diverse project teams.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Backend Developers when joining a new project?

Contract Backend Developers often encounter challenges such as quickly understanding existing codebases, adapting to different tech stacks, and aligning with the team's development practices. Since contract roles usually have tight deadlines, developers must rapidly familiarize themselves with project documentation and workflows. Effective communication with team members and proactive clarification of requirements are essential to ensure smooth integration and successful project outcomes.

What are contract backend developers?

Contract backend developers are professionals hired on a temporary or project basis to build and maintain the server-side logic, databases, and APIs that power web or mobile applications. They work behind the scenes to ensure that applications function smoothly, handle data efficiently, and communicate effectively with front-end systems. Unlike full-time employees, contract backend developers typically work for a set duration or on specific projects, offering flexibility to both clients and developers. They often bring specialized expertise in programming languages such as Python, Java, Node.js, or Ruby, and may work remotely or on-site depending on the contract terms.

This position is designated as work-from-home.

Description:

We’re looking for a Lead Platform Developer to own the architecture, scalability, and reliability of our core platform. You’ll lead a small team of engineers, define platform standards and patterns, and build highly available services and tooling that accelerate product teams. This role is part hands-on development, part technical leadership, and part cross-functional influence.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Own the platform architecture: Design and evolve cloud-native, multi-tenant, secure platform components (APIs, services, eventing, data pipelines, shared libraries).
    • Lead the team: Mentor engineers, lead code/design reviews, improve engineering practices, and drive continuous improvement.
    • Build platform capabilities: Authentication/authorization, service discovery, configuration, observability, feature flags, rollout/rollback tooling, and developer experience (DX) pipelines.
    • Reliability at scale: Implement SLOs/SLIs, error budgets, and chaos/resiliency testing; drive performance benchmarking and capacity planning.
    • Security by design: Champion secure coding, secrets management, dependency hygiene, and compliance needs (e.g., SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI—depending on domain).
    • Cloud & infra automation: Infrastructure as Code (IaC), CI/CD pipelines, environment strategy, container orchestration, ephemeral environments.
    • Data platform collaboration: Partner with data teams on streaming (e.g., Kafka), warehousing, schema governance, and data contracts.
    • Technical strategy: Evaluate build vs. buy, set platform roadmaps, deprecate legacy systems, and guide modernization.
    • Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with product engineering, SRE, security, QA, and architecture to deliver platform capabilities that product teams love.
    • Incident leadership: Lead severity incidents, postmortems, and drive preventive improvements.

    Required Skills and Qualifications

    • 7–10+ years of software engineering experience, with 2–4+ years in platform, infrastructure, or distributed systems roles referred
    • Expert in at least one backend language (e.g., C#/.NET, Java/Kotlin, Go, Node.js, Python).
    • Strong with cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), containers (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD (GitHub Actions/Azure DevOps/GitLab CI/Jenkins).
    • Hands-on with IaC (Terraform, Pulumi, or ARM/Bicep) and environment management.
    • Solid understanding of distributed systems concepts: idempotency, backpressure, eventual consistency, retries/circuit breakers, caching.
    • Proven experience designing observability (logging, metrics, tracing) with tools like OpenTelemetry, Prometheus/Grafana, ELK, Datadog, or New Relic.
    • Experience leading projects, mentoring engineers, and collaborating across teams.
    • Clear, concise communication and stakeholder management.
    • Experience with event-driven architectures, Kafka/PubSub, or service mesh (Istio/Linkerd).
    • API design expertise (REST/GraphQL/gRPC), versioning, and contract testing (PACT).
    • Security depth: OAuth2/OIDC, mTLS, policy-as-code (OPA), secrets management (Vault/SM/Key Vault).
    • Data platform familiarity: CDC, streaming ETL, lakehouse/warehouse patterns.
    • Reliability practices: SRE, SLOs/error budgets, chaos engineering.
    • Regulated environments (e.g., SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, FedRAMP) and audit-readiness.
    • Performance profiling and cost-optimization at scale.

    Citizenship or Work Authorization Required:

    • Ability to attain Federal Government Position of Trust.
    • Must be a U.S. citizen
    • Must pass a background investigation.
    Required Education, certification & Experience:
    • A BS degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Information Systems, or Computer Science, from an ABET accredited or CAE designated institution fulfills the educational requirement .
Note: The U.S. Department of Education Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs located at https://amspub.abet.org/aps/name-search?searchType=institution identifies accredited postsecondary institutions. Certification requirement(s) for this role is AN IASAE II certification (CASP+CE, CLSSP associate) or CSSLP.
